On the 2" brakes the backing plate will be shallow. The 2 1/2 brakes will be deeper. If that makes any sense. I am sure there are late model 2" brake drums. Check out Rockauto.com .

Just to clarify. You can not use the '71-'87 5 lug axles in a '63-'70 12 bolt housing. They are 3/4" too long.
If you want to upgrade to the 2-1/2" wide rear brakes, you must change the backing plates also. That is where the extra 1/2" is.

I just swapped my axles about a month ago. I used the Speedway kit that I got from a guy on CL who got the wrong kit for his 71. Saved me about $100! I also put new bearings and seals in while I had it apart. The kit is nice and the axles are thicker than the stock ones. The drums have cooling fins and the lugs are bigger than stock. All that added up makes it a stronger set up for sure. I have 15x10 rally wheels on the back with 4.5 inch backspace. 295/50/15 tires but you will have to roll the lip or do like the PO of my truck did and cut it out.

Hey there,
No reservations about the Speedway kit then? I saw those but hesitated due to the fact that the kit was so cheap, not to mention the "China thing" which today is really not that big of an issue. I am going to put mine on stands tomorrow and get started with this transformation... Drove it to work today for the first time and it's a hoot to drive... I just measured from the inner fender lip to the inside of the tub/bed and there is 13" of space in there...probably about 12" that is usable. Looking at an 18x11 wheel at this point. T
