4L80e wiring help

I'm got my wait4me harness back today and I'm really confused about the wiring on my transmission.

First off, these are the only transmission connections on the harness

and this one yellow wire, mixed in with a bundle of unlabled wires. I dont know what to do with any of them....even the labeled one!!!

so that still leaves the plastic gear position thingy on the side of the trans to deal with. there are no wires in the engine harness that connect to it so what do I do about that? doesnt the ecu need to read that module to know what gear its in and things like that? I'm REALLY confused and would greatly appreciate any and all help!

Re: 4L80e wiring help

The gear position indicator isn't a needed function to run the truck. All it does is tell the BCM what position the gear lever is in so it can be displayed on the heads up display. The trans stuff you have should be the main connector for the solenoids etc, then the ISS and VSS.

The labeled wire says "park neutral position switch" if I'm filling on the blanks I can't see correctly. This should most likely be the wire that connects to the switch thats on your shifter. Its a safety measure, but not a bad idea to hook it up if you can.

I have no clue what all the unlabeled stuff is. I suggest you call whoever did your harness and ask them. No way for us to know for sure. Usually the only wires on a swap harness that need to be physically terminated are constant or switched 12v powers to various places like the fuse box, starter etc.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

Ok so I don't need anything to plug into that box on the selector shaft. Can it just be removed from the transmission then?
I thought that's where that neutral wire went so thanks for confirming that for me. I'll call Jesse today about the others and thank you so much for the help!

I'm gonna call him today. I just got the harness late last night. I'm at work right now.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

LilTroy you are correct the switch on the shift shaft contains the neutral safety switch. Also for the 4l80 you should have one more of the connectors on the left in your picture. The 80 has both ISS and VSS on it. One more thing that needs to be changed is the position of a few wires in the round connector.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

So I just got off the phone with Hannah at wait4me performance. First I have to tell you she was very cheerful as well as helpful.
The marked wire is the neutral safety and is the only wore required in that group. It can either be run to the black box on the side of the transmission for a neutral signal OR can simply be connected to the neutral safety switch on my b&m shifter. The reason it wasn't run to a plug is because I had informed them when I sent it in that I had not yet found the transmission I was going to use and the 4l80 up to 2004 had a two plug setup whereas the 05-up have a single plug so they didn't know which I would need. Turns out to be a good thing since I'm running a ratchet shifter with the neutral switch on it, I can just get rid of the MLP sensor on the side of the transmission all together and not have that extra harness under there.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

Boosted, the iss and vss connectors are both in the pic. The one on the left just has the outer part broken off.... I'll be replacing the plug. And it was already pinned for 4l80e to begin with.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

Usually the ISS and VSS connectors don't have a hard shell like on the right. Is it an older 80?

Re: 4L80e wiring help

the trans is a 2001. the harness is a 2006. Im actually going to change the connectors out for the ones that came with the transmission since one on the harness is broken anyway.

They built your harness and sent it back with the trans wiring all dirty. Really?

The whole harness looks like that. Check out my build thread for details

Re: 4L80e wiring help

The oddball square connector has a label on it...what does it say? If its not a VSS/ISS, then that harness only has one...meaning it was set for a 4l60e, or a 4x4 4l80e

Thats whats weird tho...I can't find a picture of the shielded square plug as a VSS. Every replacement part I can find is the small open two-prong plug. So I feel like its messing with my head. I looked at probably 20 harness layouts.

Agreed. On some 4x4 applications, there is a short VSS jumper harness that goes from the transfer case to the main harness, but I can't remember if it has a plug like the OP is showing in the pictures. Maybe the harness pictured above is from a 4x4 application.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

All I know is its got the right wires in it and it plugs in. The inner plug is the same...just with a different outer piece but I'm wanting to switch it out for the ones on the transmission I bought.I'm just not sure how to take these plugs apart without breaking them??? Anybody got that knowledge for me?

Re: 4L80e wiring help

Weatherpak connectors usually have a couple "tabs" that let the plug snap apart and reveals the little terminals where the wires attach.

If its Molex (where there is like a dried epoxy holding everything in place, then you have to cut them off and wire a new one on.

Re: 4L80e wiring help

That's how the plugs currently on the harness are.... They unsnap at the back but the ones on the transmission don't. That's why I'm stumped. Pep boys sells weather pac connectors but didn't have any that small. I looked earlier when I was buying wire loom. So much drama for such a little thing..... Kinda like my wife lol.

Thank you for the help. After talking to Hannah at wait4me performance, apparently I was missing the vss connector on my harness so she replaced it with what she had laying around. It's the right plug, just has a weird lock shell, however, that set of wires only needed to be about five inches long. The transmission I bought has those connectors still on it but the vss sensor one only has about 1/4 inch of wire sticking out so I had to take it apart and I'm now searching ford my solder iron join wires together to connector. I will be shortening the harness a bit as well.
Thanks for all the help gentlemen..........oh and you too aknovaman.
