I have a 283m and i put a 795 Q- jet on it is that too big for the engine. It is a stock 283 and i can't get it to run right it is sputtering and has no power.

The problem is not that the carb is too big..but may be jetted too rich. The beauty of those carbs id the air valve secondary will only give the motor as much as it wants. Chevy put them on 3.8 v-6's and pontiac had them on 230 overhead cam motors in the late 60's. Jet it right and it will run fine
