options for A/C in AD

hi guys,
I am finally thinking about adding A/C to my truck.

I have decided that I want an under dash unit (with heat) similar to this one:

but I am overwhelmed by all of the different combinations and options. (they are hard to compare because most don't give specifications like CFM or number of coils, etc.)

I already have the factory compressor on the 4.3L V6 engine that I used to build the truck, but nothing else from the old A/C unit.

Is it better to piece something together? What vendor is best? How do I price compare if they don't include the specs?

Call them for the questions you have. Old air is a good unit as is vintage air , I've used both with good results. As far as using the old compressor you should get a remain unit if you want the stock one. If not use their recommended compressor. The cab is small so most any unit installed correctly will freeze you out.

I have found the difference to be in the output of the blower fans and I have not found a rating that is standard (CFM) among the manuf.

I don't think you get much choice in sizing an aftermarket AC system. Benefit of a truck cab is that it's small so cooling it down shouldn't be too difficult.

If you have the R4 compressor, make sure it's an R134-A model. Also, you can adapt a Sanden 508 style compressor in it's place. The Sandens are pretty much the standard for aftermarket AC.

I'd check with who ever makes the unit you buy and make sure that they would honor the warranty with a used compressor in the system. My big worry would be that the compressor had been sitting open for a period of time and might have contaminants in it otherwise if it is good it should work fine.

I have used a GM R4 for 134a with the Old Air kit so I know that will work.

wow, that coldmaster unit looks nice. have you tried it out yet? how does it work? where did you get the other components to complete your install?

Have you tried it out yet? I just installed it a few days ago under the dash, it's a nice fit.

How does it work? All I did was hook up the power, it runs quiet, has a nice air flow.

Components? I will finish install after the truck is painted.

And the price is great.
