Tranny swap

I need some information. Does anybody know if it is at al possible to put a newer style transmission into a 1968 truck?
(GMC) It has the original four speed and the old chain driven transfer case, but there are some serious problems with it, and i was wondering if i could put in an 80's, or late 70's four or possible a five speed in there. Is this possible or am i going to have to look for and original tranny? thanks, - - Bender
