Buying R12 Freon on Craigslist
Finally got my R12 system leak tested and ready to recharge it. I am staying with a R12 system.
I found this posting on Craigslist and before I shell out $180 for a partially filled cylinder (gross weight is 18.6 lbs.) I wanted to check with the experts on this forum. Does this sound like a fair deal? (12 oz cans are going for $20-$30 each around here...) Anything specific I should check or be aware of before I purchase? Thanks

Do you have anyway to weigh it before you buy it to make sure of it's capacity?

I could bring a digital scale and weigh it but lets assume it does weigh 16.8 lbs. How much would the actual cylinder weigh and how much would be Freon?
Also, any concerns that what is in the tank is still usable? Does time break down the product?

You'll have to see if the guy selling it is a flake. Hope no one recovered something other than r-12 and it is new gas. I have never met anyone on Craigslist that wasn't a weirdo. Buying or selling. Hope its on the up and up. If it is you are getting a good deal. The container doesn't weigh more than 2 lbs.

Just be aware its not actually legal to buy or sell without an EPA card...I would be leery if you dont have the card as you really dont know who you are dealing with/

I would only buy it in unused sealed cans. That way you can be sure of what you are getting. I still use it in my 72, factory system takes 4 cans.

my recovery machine uses special tanks with 2 valves on the top...dont know if other brands let you pump recovered freon back into an original tank...a little concerned about the name,havent seen that brand before...make sure its really r-12 and not a substitute like freeze 12

It could be legit. If it were me I'd want to but a refrigerant identifier on it to make sure you're weren't just buying propane.
Nothing wrong with the brand.

If you check around you can probably find it a lot cheaper. I picked up a case of it ( 12 cans) at the last Decatur swap meet for $35 total. I wouldn't trust buying in a bulk container like that. You don't know what you're getting.
