Transmissions
I have a 1969 CST-10 that has a muncie M20 residing in the tranny well. I did not do this modification but want to upgrade to a 5 speed. What 5 speed would you recomend for the most hasslle free install. Im looking to get a better overdrive ratio. Right now the 4th gear is a 1:1 and with 3.73 out back the highway makes me cringe. Should I just have my fourth gear altered. So many choices.....

When you say hassle free, are you looking for a direct bolt in, or can you handle some modifications? |

I like the Richmond 5 spd street and the 6 spd T56s, but they could run up in the big bucks. The 5 spd doesn't offer a OD but the 6 does. Check out a 200/700R4 if you want an auto with OD. www.richmondgear.com

Thanks for the help. Im thinking the 6 speed as price isnt that much of a concern. Ive been into restoring cars for a while, but have never ran into the problems of madifying vehicles. Now that I have hotroded my '69 CST-10....It turned out good but the muncie four speed was a bad swap for the auto. I want a manual. Im thinking the 6 speed but how much mod to the trans tunnel? and also what kind of bellhousing will be required to bolt it to a chevy smallblock (1970 block)?

T56's came factory on F-bodies (camaro/firebird) and corvettes so finding one with a sbc bellhousing shouldn't be a problem at all. The T56 puts the shifter back farther than the stock location so you'll have to do some sawzall or cutting wheel surgery.

I think you MAY have to get a high hump floor also or bang a low hump up some. I may be wrong though

Your other option is a Tremec 3550 or TKO 5-speed OD. This is not to be confused with a T-5.

You can get a 5 spd from a 90's chevy truck pretty cheap. They have overdrive and should bolt right up.

A couple of caveats with going with a late model truck 5-speed instead of the tremec.
1) You need to swap over the bellhousing to go with the hydraulic clutch. 2) You need to get either an electric speedometer that will accept the pulse from the transmission or get a converter that converts the pulse signal from the transmission to a cable drive to utilize the original speedometer. I thought abvout getting a late model 5-speed out of a wecking yard for my truck, but it ended up being less fabrication work to get the 3550 instead. |

I would get a T56 because they have a double over drive. i like mine.
