Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
A friend wants to install the pictured steering column in his C10--anyone ever done this? Works great, needs a new steering wheel of course. What do ya'll think?

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
I've seen them installed in 73 up c10's but to me they are to bulky to look right in anything below a 73. install should be the same as installing a 73+ column, its ben 20 or so years since I messed with a caddy column

To be honest that looks like a 1967-70 Cadillac steering wheel? Is ignition on the column?

Here's one from a 1967 Eldorado
Also you should be able to find a better one than the sorry one you have there. Don't want to be negative but you should be able to find a better one. |

Thanks guys, that looks like the one. I would agree, there are probably better ones out there and if he wants to do it I will recommend that. The telescopic function is useful in our trucks I think--especially if you're a bit on the calorically challenged side....

I have thought about it. Does that column have 4 way flasher button on the column.

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
Good question. My 1966 Coupe Deville had a factory installed "optional" flasher. As stated on my original 1966 window sticker.
Since at the time only 2 states required it. I think CA and NY. Not sure when they became required nationwide. My 1966 flasher is mounted on the lower dash drivers side of steering column, not on the column itself. The 1967 Cadillac data book states the hazzard flasher is standard in 1967 on all models. So standard from 1967 and on. Now where was it installed? |

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
Yes but that column has a key in it. I believe 68 cadillachad a 4 way flasher and a ignition key in the dash . Not sure about 67. 66 did not have a flasher on the column and 69 has a key in the column. That leaves a small window if you want to make it look somewhat correct.

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
Just adding to this thread. Yes this is 100% doable. I just finished one for my 67. I found out that most parts interchange from 67 to 68 tilt telescopic columns and 70 72 truck tilt columns. All you need to do is take the top half tilt up off the car column and add it to a truck tilt column. Now you will have to use the car steering wheel. I had mine restored and had a custom horn button machined. This is a truck tilt lower half from shifter down, 67 cadillac tilt and telescopic center from a 67 cadillac, 66 cadillac steering wheel ( looks more correct with a 3 spoke wheel) and 66 impala horn cap. Hardest part to this is adding the gear indicator to the car tilt housing and make it light up and line up properly. This took a lot of time to make look correct and for most probably not worth it but here it is. There is more in my build thread on this if you are interested in doing this as well.

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
I wondered when you would show that off. Cool! So, start with a truck tilt and add tele/tilt from knuckle-out, right?
I've been wanting to ask what exact steering wheel that horn button I got from you went with. That wheel had a ribbed rim. I have what were called '67 Impala wheels that are different and it doesn't seem the button is meant for those. When I search Ebay for '67 or '68 Impala or Chevelle I get pretty much the same wheels. I don't trust those sellers know what they have. My wheels have fixed shrouds where the button works like on a truck. I see the ones like you show mostly claimed to be '67 Chevelle wheels with the buttons in the spokes and the center cap fixed

Here is a thread I did on what I found. This is my 64 SS Impala column. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...rch/1/#2701359 chewychevy67 that is a good looking column and it will be nice having both tilt and telescopic.

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
Chewy, quick question:
When the (cadillac) steering wheel is collapsed down does it sit closer to the dash than the stock tilt wheel system...or about the same? ...noting that the seats in these trucks don't seem to have the same back adjustment range as the cars...or probably what the cadillacs do. All good Coley

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
The stock one sits 13" from top of cluster with a non tilt column. This wheel when collapsed and the column pushed all the way back sits 10.25" back. So 2 3/4 inches difference. Comes out to 13.5" extended. If you use the impala steering wheel. It sits further back to 9 3/4" from the top of the cluster cause that wheel is completely flat. This is when the column is straight. The caddy wheel had a small dish to it. Look at my build page 13 for more info on this.

Re: Installing A Cadillac Telescoping /Tilt Wheel in A C10
Chewy, that looks really nice. I have a caddy column that came in my 68 burb, but I'm not liking my wheel or the ignition switch. I'd like to change my indicator also. I do like the tilt/tele though.
