235 intake leak

I just rebuilt my 235 in August and re installed it in my 62. I have three leaks coming from my intake to the head. I have a good gasket and its only coming where the three intake ports attach to the head. After looking at it a while it looks like gas is running down after the truck has setting. I am running two Carter Weber carbs with a Offenhauser intake. Has anyone else had this problem? The truck runs great. it is the ugly stains I'm having on my new painted engine. I don't have any pics of the leak but here is a pic of the engine setup. Need some help from the experienced 235 guys.

I have the exact same setup as you. Mine would drown the block with fuel after it was turned off due to contaminants in the carbs. The float shut off valve was not fully seating due to debris. Have you taken apart the carbs yet and thoroughly cleaned everything out yet? If not you have to. The holes that tom drilled were the cause of my issue as he does not take the carb apart after to clean it.

as for the gasket leak you still need to fix that. Make sure all the tabs on the bolts that hold the manifolds are making contact with both the intake and exhaust flanges. At times the intake and exhaust are not the same thickness and not allowing the same clamp force on both components. I have seen people add spaces to the shorter flange component or grinding off of the thicker components back side or even taking the appropriate manifold in to a shop of have the front face taken down.

I have taken the front carb off and clean it out. I guess thats why the front is barely leaking down. So I guess Ill take them off and clean them. In the pic you circled the those are the ones Tom drilled? I watched your video and I think I only have fuel to one barrel bot both. I guess ill shoot a video and send it to you. Called Tom and he told me the same thing about cleaning out the drill holes, I just didn't know what holes he was talking about.

so he sends them out without cleaning out drillings and tells people to do it themselves? Wow, can this be right? I may be narrow-minded, but if they were mine he'd get them right back with a request that he finish the job paid for. I must be mis-understanding something here, he seems to have a pretty good reputation.

What wolffcub said, in detail. make sure those washers or whatever they're called seat fully on both manifolds and that the bolts are not bottoming out in the threaded holes in the head.

Didn't there used be an issue with incorrect locator rings keeping the intake manifold from seating?

Yes you should always check to see if the intake rings are properly seating in the ports.

Im on my second pair of carbs from tom. The first pair were both made on a Friday at 4:59pm. One had a power valve issue and the other just acted funny and would never deliver fuel correctly. I had to buy a second pair and he never gave me a credit for the first pair. Even when getting the second pair i had to clean them out prior to installing them and found the same debris in the bowl. The second pair are working fine however I have a feeling the jetting needs to be adjusted and is not ready to use as tom notes them to be.

The first set of carbs i got sure don't looked drilled to me but rather punched in. First it looks like the hole is punched into the metal body then possibly something blunt used to poke the hole in the gasket just below. The reason i say blunt is because the gaskets did not have a nice hole in it but rather a tear drop shaped tears in it and the gasket bit was hanging down ready to fall off in the bowl.

How did you adjust the jet? I just pulled it out and cleaned it and put it back in by counting the turns. I think I can get more power if I can get this carbs and gaskets set right. I also need to get the rings. I don't have any in the truck right now.

I want to second the point Mr. Wolffcub made in post #4. I have a similar set up with my Stovebolt, although my Langdon Carter/Webers run great with no adjustments needed. Although I have an Edmunds intake, I had to lightly machine the front face to get the 3 ports perfectly flat. I also had to notch and shim the "washers" so that the bolts were applying even pressure to both the intake and Fentons.
