Re: New member with a 1960

I do need some advice regarding the bed, in the mid section (Tire Area) of the bed it measures about 49-1/2 wide, at the front and rear of the bed it is right at 50 which leads me to the assumption that the center needs to go outwards, is this correct? I see no way to bring the front and back inwards, I was thinking of building a jig and using a bottle jack to push the center area outwards and brace it out until the bed floor is installed. What do you guys suggest?

Re: New member with a 1960

How do the center cross sills fit? I would tell you to try to line the holes on the center cross sills up with the holes on the L shape brackets that are supposed to run along the side of the bed but it does not appear as if your truck has them. How are you going to keep your bed attached without the L shaped rails sitting on top of the wood?

Yea....I'm going to need some help here... Can you show me a picture of what you are talking about? Obviously somewhere along the line my L brackets were discarded!

After looking, there are no holes in my bed for angle strips?

Re: New member with a 1960

The angle strips are welded to the sides of the bed and lay on top of the wood. I don't have any pictures on hand but if you look at one of the threads about bed wood you will find what I am talking about. Both step sides and fleet sides have them. Have you checked to see if the top of your bed sides are straight I could not imagine those being bowed also.

Re: New member with a 1960

This is before poly, the wood is flat as glass, I've got 35 hours of sanding from 80 grit to 220
These photos are after 3 applications of denatured alcohol and wood dye sanding after the first two applications and linseed oil after the third.
In 48 hours I will start the poly process!

Re: New member with a 1960

These are after 3 applications of poly, light wet sanding after each, only 7 more to go! LOL
Obviously you are going to see a little trash in the finish until the final wet sand, and buff but I am really happy so far, the wood has a ton of characteristic

Thank you sir, I have done my years share of sanding...LOL I hope do be finished by the end of the weekend except for the final sanding and buffing, I want to let it cure for a couple of weeks first.
FINALLY I got the e-mail where most of my front end parts are in transit besides ball joints and steering rebuild kit (on backorder)
I ordered the LS Swap headers and motor mount/frame mount kit also. Getting ready to order truck wiring harness and engine harness.
The LS goes to the shop at the end of the week for bottom end rebuild, head work/port etc and blower install.

We are moving right along again!

Re: New member with a 1960

Here are some mock up photos, remember the poly has to cure before sanding to 3000 grit and buffing so it's got some imperfections right now

Re: New member with a 1960

make sure to poly all edges and underneath as well,...it will seal up the wood and help stop warpage...looks good,..that semi gloss or high gloss?

It is all sealed, that is a high gloss, it still needs wet sanded and buffed!
Thanks

Re: New member with a 1960

My backordered ball joints arrived... We can get back on this junk! It should be on 4 tires by the weekend, then brake lines/booster/MC
what are some good resources for pre bent lines?
