292 Engine Code
I have searched every site I can find and I am still unclear how to decode these numbers. This engine is in a 71 K10. I am now pretty sure it is not the original engine. This is what I have so far:
Casting number 3921970 66-76 292 con 2 conveyor 2 J 12 7 Oct 12th ? Distributor pad F1117UA Flint plant ???? ?? Nov 17 The two date codes do no match in the casting date and the date stamped on the pad. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Getting ready to rebuild this engine just want to make sure to order the correct parts. |

Re: 292 Engine Code
I'm gonna guess that it's a '67 or '68 [Model Year] and that the "UA" you see is a bad strike for UH, UR, UP, or UN. "J 12 7" = Oct 12th 1967.
I have an engine in my '68 C/10 Stepside that's stamped F0627XAE. I know it's the original 292 engine, at least since I bought the truck in 1973. I also had a core 292 that I ran for 25 years, pulled out of a '67 ex-Forest Service stepside that's stamped F0626UH. My "UH" is on the charts but I could never get a read on "XAE". Then again, yours could be a perfect UA and our knowledge base is too limited to learn more. The '67 and '68 Flint L-25 292 L6 blocks were good pieces, and the 12-lobed crank was the perfected design.

I've been looking for your XAE code for the past 2 years. Even written several expert numbers men and still nothing. Have you ever checked the date code on your block? I'm curious to see if it's 67 or 68 or maybe even 66?

I guess you have a better decoder than the LMC catalog offers?

Re: 292 Engine Code
I've built both above-mentioned 292s, bored .030 over to 296 CuIn. Last build [XAE] I used a Crane 260H cam, Badger cast pistons*, and larger intake valves [1.84"] with hardened seats. On both I ran an Offy intake and Clifford headers. I had a Holley 390 CFM 4 barrel on [UH] but after 25 years, it was shot, so I went with an Edelbrock 1404 500 FCM 4 barrel on the XAE rebuild.
Take it to the machinist for a mag flux and to see if it's not cracked. Then greenlight your rebuild. [* In 1977 when I built "UH" up, I was able to get TRW forged 292-.030 pistons, but they're not in the auto parts business now. Forged 292 pistons are custom jobs and as such are real expensive.]

Re: 292 Engine Code
The UA code is correct for 1967 292 170 hp with manual trans. The UA code does come up for other year 292's, but your block build date is 1967.
