Bed wood undercoating

What product would you all recommend for undercoating the bed wood?

I have used Rhino lining on various outdoor wood projects with a lot of success but that was when the entire surface was encapsulated. The concern I have here is that if you undercoat the wood from the bottom side only, you are potentially creating a moisture problem where the wood can't breathe, which will have the opposite effect from what you want to do. You might actually create a situation where the wood pieces warp and crack faster than if you don't treat it at all.

Interestingly, Mar-K tested a bunch of different wood treatment methods, and they came up with their best recommendation of POR-15 topcoat with some latex ValSpar.

I hope you are not planning on using the por15 product that did the best in the mar-k test por15 no longer makes it. They carry another product called 2K Urethane. Which is a replacement for a product that failed the mar-k test. I am going to try it. We will see what happens. Thanks for the advice on the undercoating.

I used black Spar paint. It was from marine paint section at Home Depot. It's been a couple of years and seems to be holding up pretty good.

great post!! I dumped a load of coin on new wood. I haven't a clue as what I want or need to do with them. keep the ideas coming in!!!!

I have replaced my bed wood twice.... first one I used a marine grade polyurethane clear and the bottom lasted very well. the top, not so good in the Texas sun and heat, although it was not left out in the sun all the time, the clear still deteriorated none the same over time, but the wood remained good and solid.

I took that bed wood and sanded it down to good wood, and did the Two part Mar-K recommendation of Por-15 and black Valspar outdoor paint. Its only been on there about year and I use that bed wood( pickup bed trailer)

I also did new Oak wood in the same manner and so far it looks very nice, again, it isn't sitting in the direct sunlight but it is outside under a carport, just like the previous bed wood. Time will tell how it lasts.
