easiest way to drop the gas tank?

i need to clean out my tanks before i try to start my new engine up, since some gas has been sitting it them since october. whats the easiest way to get the tanks off the truck with the bed still on?

Eric, I removed my tank with the bed off, but it should be similar.

Get a floor jack or trans jack and a couple boards. Place the boards between the jack and gas tank...jack it up enough to put slight pressure on the tank. Take off the bolts holding the straps, unhook the filler neck, fuel lines, and wiring. Once everything is removed, lower the jack slowly. Make sure the tank is centered on the jack (weight wise), because if it is not it will fall off and scare the crap out of ya.

That is pretty much it. To make it easier, you might want to siphon as much gas out of there as you can...it can get heavy with alot of fuel in it.

Others may disagree with me, but I would just siphon out what what you can if the tank is full, and then add 6 or 8 gallons with a gas can. It is a lot less work. If there is not that much gas in there, I would just top it off (to dilute the old gas with fresh stuff) and go.

My truck was down for 8 months recently, and the stock 305 ran great on 8 month old gas. It is just an old 305, though. It will run on anything, kind of like a lawn mower, but with fewer horsepower.

I pulled mine down like Jeff, but I found it easier to unbolt the strap/brackete assembly from the frame. Then you can paint behind it, as well.

i usualy try to almost run mine out of gas if its going to be down for awhile, then just dilute the small amount of gas let with fresh gas before i start it up, like slonaker suggested

if i remember my driver's tank had only a tiny bit left in it(it was on E). my passanger side has a little less than 1/4 tank left in it.

My dads old 77K10 with the 400SB started with year-old gas(or older), after revin the crap outa it to get the skip out it ran real smooth and idled nicely too.

My '52 F*rd 8N tractor sits for 3-4 months at a time with the same gas in it, always starts up just fine too. Never had a problem.....
