Re: build of a 1966 c-20 custom camper
Awesome! Mr. Custom Camper himself is doing it again. School is in session!
Hey Mike, how about just a little backstory on your subject truck, you know, like how many miles on the clock, where you found it, options, etc. I'm just guessing by the body colored gas door that it's had at least a partial repaint? Last edited by oem4me; 11-29-2015 at 12:35 PM. |

Re: build of a 1966 c-20 custom camper
It is a 1966 c-20 built in Fremont Ca 10-29-65 Sold at Vista Chevrolet in Chino Ca. It was sold to a lady to go camping in . I am the 3rd owner. The 1st owner had it from 1966-2008. The second 2008-2011. When I bought it it has 60000 miles . It now has 61000 . The second owner told me when he bought it the mileage was 58000. The second owner said the original camper was still in it . When he removed the camper from the truck the camper fell apart. The truck is rust free no holes in the floor, rockers fenders etc. I wish my red truck was this nice to start with. it was optioned with 327 turbo 400 custom camper option 21 gallon tank . it also was factory ps. I believe the 1st owner had the dealership install it 357 rear end . My plans are back to stock . I will install factory air tach vaccum gauge. and Detroit rear locker from my spare parts supply. I hope all goes well . Body goes to media blasting next week , than to body and paint. I will tearing the frame down during this time , getting it ready for the motor tranny and than body parts . Yes Bruce it had a repaint sometime in the 80s ? It looks like they painted the truck with the camper on. crappy paint job

I see a fresh looking brake booster there. Did you add that, and are you going to upgrade with in-dash A/C as well?

Re: build of a 1966 c-20 custom camper
Mike,
Looking forward to your progress and learning lots. Sure it will help me with my 64' restoration project. What are you planning to do with undercoating on the cab? I decided to remove mine, as it will live in a humid climate. It is really tough stuff on mine, built in St. Louis. About 8 hours of work. Front fenders undercoating, thoughts on keeping or removing. Removed it from rear inner fenders. Thanks for sharing, Les Last edited by aotte1; 11-30-2015 at 12:29 AM. |

Re: build of a 1966 c-20 custom camper
Lots of great progress on your truck, how is it looking, find anything interesting. Hoping to take mine to get cleaned next Saturday. Just need to get the springs off. Listing all the clips that hold brake lines, wire harness, emergency brake cable, etc today along with their coating.
Does your media blasting cleaner shop remove the undercoating too. Sure you have it under control, however, in past have had sheet metal warped by this process. Les Last edited by aotte1; 12-04-2015 at 11:03 PM. |

Re: build of a 1966 c-20 custom camper
Glad undercoating will come off easy, mine is really hard and super stuck on.
So far Airplane Paint stripper is what is working, 10 hours and almost done. |

Rust free, dent free and no missing parts. Can't get any better than that.
Drooling along side of Clem. |
