85 GMC engine VIN

I need to figure out of my 305 is a H or a F. It`s a california model if that helps. Is this the number stamped on the deck that is currently covered by all the smog crap and alt. or is this in the actual VIN number? I need to get some smog parts to try to get my CEL to go out and want to make sure I get the right stuff.

Re: 85 GMC engine VIN

The 8th digit in the truck vin should tell you what engine should be in the truck,g would be 305 G rpo LG9,. H would be 305H rpo LE9 , F would be 305 F rpo LF3 this is only good if it has the original engine in it
Also I think in frt of the right cyl head will have a 3 letter stamp.i can look the three letter stamping numbers up to 1984 they should be like tbj,tic tfw and so on. Hope this helps. Bob

Re: 85 GMC engine VIN

It's possible the engine was replaced but even if it was I'd still need to have the correct smog equipment.

Trucks with F had different stuff than trucks with H from what I've found when life ng up smog parts.
