HydroBoost to Vacuum Assist?
Anyone know if it is feasible to convert my 75 Chevy C30 lousy hydro-boost setup to a vacuum assist setup?
The hydro-boost is giving me nothing but trouble! It has always made the most horrible gurgling, squishy sounds and braking while turning has provided some hairy moments! Then I accidently over-filled the power steering pump and the noises went away except if I use the brakes now while steering, the power steering capability drops to ZERO! I'm 64 and trying to steer this beast in tight places is aging me fast! truck is a Scottsdale Camper Special and I never intend to run a camper or tow anything major with this truck in the foreseeable future. Any suggestions? Thanks! Wayne |

Re: HydroBoost to Vacuum Assist?
I did this swap for my 89 crew-cab dually so yes it can be done.
Like yours, my hydra-boost never worked properly & leaked everywhere. I based my vacuum system off of a similar year model 3/4 ton suburban. The brake booster has to be swapped & you'll need the correct pedal for a vacuum set-up. While it may not be 'as good' as a 100% new hydra-boost set-up, it works much better than what was there.

Would a vacuum booster for a Scottsdale of the same size and year work? I already have a new one of those. What is different about the pedal? Or is it the rod from the pedal? (I'm proving this is my first mid-70's pick up) Wayne Thanks! |
