Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Thank's Guys..
Doug, as for the guns. I use for base and clear is a Finishline gun we picked up last year it was about $200.00 For primers I bought the 3M acuuspray gun it has disposable tips 1.5,1.8 and 2.0 Pic #1. the finishline gun Pic #2. The 3m accuspray gun. This thing is awesome! If it starts to spray funny just remove the tip and replace! (Like having a new gun every time) I end up re using the tips several times till it sprays kinda bad..box of tips $20.00 for 4

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Your build is looking great. You definitely have a knack for metal working that stands out above the rest. Like others have said, I hope you don't mine me taking some of your ideas and putting them into my next truck.
I do have a question though. I couldn't help but notice the blue looking die on your metal patches. What is it and what's its main purpose? Thanks for the great info and I'm subscribing for the finishing touches, Charles.

Mark, thanks for the info on the guns. A coworker that does his own paint recommended the same. I have on my personal development learning to paint. So many variables....

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Thank's Charles...
As for the blue stuff....It is called Dykem it is a layout fluid used in machine shops, fab shops etc. How it's used is you cover the metal in the dye and let dry and then using a scribe to mark lines etc. it gives you a more accurate line. (A cheaper way or if you can't find it Use a large Marker) On another note if you want to see a Ton of metal work checkout "Project orangepeel" build it is my personal truck. Thank's for checking out this one... Mark...

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Here is another example of the dye being used in a drill press, once you mark you holes it makes it really easy to see where the next one needs to be drilled.

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Thank You Gentlemen!!
Pic #1. In this pic I'm showing how I keep from getting to close to the body line.If you notice the (blue fine line tape) used first then the yellow painters tape. The reason I used the fine line here is it does not roll up when hit with sandpaper. The masking tape will roll the edge and some of the glue will get on your sanded surface and create a big mess! Pic #2. close up of the tape. Pic #3. You can see here how it leaves a really clean line, now I will go over the bodyline with a 3000 Grit pad by hand, followed by a 5000 grit Pic #4. The end result, all ready to polish. Pic #5. The top all rubbed and polished. Mark...

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Pic #1. These are the products I use, made by Wizards.
They are really good products and cost about half what the 3M stuff does and works just as good if not better. If you notice I use different towels with each step as well. Pic #2. step 1. Can be used with foam or wool pads. Pic #3. step 2. black or grey pad. And I also have the small pads for the die grinder for fine detail work. Pic #4. step 3. this step can be put on by hand or machine. I prefer machine it gives a better overall finish. Mark...

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
5000 grit!?! Wow, that's some fine sanding. And here I thought 3000 was plenty. The shop I worked at many years ago stopped at 2000. Granted, those were insurance jobs, not show vehicles... That's going to be shiny and smooth like water in a glass!

Re: Blake's 67 GMC stepside build
Knomadd, The 3000 and 5000 grit are the 3M trizact pads for the DA sander. The 3000 gets used a bit more it helps take out fine scratches. And the 5000 just makes the cutting process easier.
This whole process is new to me and just started to use these items. Mark...

oooooo Jackie Blue! You gotta love those '67 hoods. A big window 67! Glad you got the fenders looking 67...Wow you are really doing it up, I just went through last fourteen pages here. I had to weld in patches in most of the same areas, I'll be updating my build thread shortly. Great job wish I could bring mine over to your shop. Are you putting in air conditioning? Did you move gas tank? Where is your exhaust coming out?
Ooh, Jackie Blue Lives her life from inside of her room Hides a smile when she's wearin' a frown Ooh, Jackie you're not so down
