General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
1971 Custom Deluxe SWB, 2-tone deluxe paint job, both sets of moldings. This is my first project and want to get her right. If you can answer these questions or offer a lead it's appreciated.
1. What is the correct paint line for the bottom body color? 2. What is the correct paint line for the top body color? If I'm "reading" it right, that paint line varies for the bed. 3. Don't have my tailgate handy, but safe to say the paint line for the Chevrolet is you just hit the flat surfaces only? 4. What is recommended for under the bed, fenders and cab? Please keep in mind I'm restoring this to original, though not knowing much about it, there may be some improvements over original. 5. Same question as #4, only for the wheel well of the inner fenders. Say, if anyone can provide solid descriptions for the correct hole locations for side moldings, tailgate moldings (Custom Deluxe) and maybe even sport mirror hole locations, I'm all ears. I do have some reference points and an assembly manual, but an improved description and solid measurements would be great. Course I wouldn't need to know every hole, just the ends for each piece. The manual can provide the rest. Thank you.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
The first message is I need to locate the right truck. I may know where one is, but the moldings are still on and it's not in good condition.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
The second message is, maybe I should just run with the dark blue, white top and moldings. Either way it doesn't match the SPID, though ochre is closer. The kicker is, a poster has talked me into a new glove box door and repro. SPID anyhow..Just set the originals aside. Could have some fun with a repro. SPID "heck yeah it's all original, check the SPID"........Not for resale purposes of course. Might be illegal regardless.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
1 & 2... The paint lines go right to the middle of the mouldings.
3......... Factory used stencils and paint loosely followed the flat outline. Just paint flat area 4......... Under the bed, cab, and fenders the factory painted with body color. Usually not a good solid coat. You could do a better job and help prevent rust 5......... The inner fenders were painted a low gloss black, same as core support I guess it's illegal to give misleading info to a buyer, but I see it as worse. I see it as immoral. That's the law no one looks over your shoulder to enforce and the reason for laws in the first place.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
Tony I'd highly recommend the factory assembly manual for 67-72 pickups - a wealth of useful info that details the location of trim/mirror holes and much more. Also, see the linked K20 build in my signature below for deails of the paint lines. I'd also call your attention to the metal atop the dash, which comes from GM in a flat finish to reduce glare and is either black or dash color depending on the original color scheme.

Thanks Dead..........I do have the manual. I was just seeking a better description for reference points, as those in the manual have no meaning. That said, one or two posters were good enough to offer some info. in other threads.
I'll check out your build thread, thank you for the reference. And yes I'm aware the dash is flat.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
Thanks K.......Concerning that SPID, I wouldn't do it for bad intentions and was just talking out loud. The truck isn't for sale, and if it were I'd be completely honest. That said, it would be a real issue if I left it for my son, he sells it without knowing any better, as I spin in my grave...........At any rate, probably a bad idea.

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
No, I was talking in general about immoral vs illegal. There's no law about changing SPIDs and as long as there's no misleading it's not immoral.

Tony, As far as colors go and what should you do, I suggest you start where we did with you 14 months ago.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=650728 Color change is up to you of course but makes it hard to change your mind later down the road. If you were to though, Dark Yellow and White IMHO looks spectacular (deluxe two tone code 480 of 519 & 521).

Re: General paint questions for 1971 two-tone deluxe & under the body
SS Tim.......That may have been my first thread. I'm thinking about the 523 and 521 top.
Either way, I'd like the moldings, though maybe not top and bottom if blue. I'm going to try locating a truck with the moldings. Be a bonus if the holes are exposed. Not that it can't be done without the references I'm looking for. I don't much care for the yellow. Guess we're even in that respect, you don't like ochre.
