ha i needed something to get your attention i know this has been brought up a thousand times and i have done all the searches and im still not sure on a straight answer i have a 50 gmc 1/2 ton and i want to keep original steering box and column im installing a 350 motor what is the best option to fit this in and make everything work i really dont want to offset motor i know its been done help me out thanks

Basically you can't get there from here without either offsetting the engine or offsetting the steering box or a bit of both.

I've been trying to figure out a simple cross steer setup that uses a common easy to get box and off the shelf parts for the most part but haven't had time to work on it.

you can with side mounts that bolts to the top side of the frame rails or a tubular that bolts inside the rails or make your own. if keeping it 3spd will need a different bell housing as the the v8 wont bolt up to the stock one and then also a different 3spd trans, drive shaft and rear. stock is an enclosed driveshaft/rear

I offset the motor to the passenger side, and spaced out the steering box slightly.

I used hugger headers which take a bit of room. Ram Horns take up less room and require less movement.

As you can see I opened up the hole in the fire wall for the column slightly.

I just welded the hole closed, redrilled and reamed the hole on the pitman arm so the rod end could be on the inside of the arm.

I used ram horns on mine, I think I off set the engine 2 1/4 inches a the steering box 3/4 off an inch. [IMG][/IMG]

we did a friends 49 a long time ago with the 1'' offset to avoid the steering box/manifold conflict
but... since then i've seen some exhaust manifold that might avoid the offset

while there are different versions, something like this that exit high and to the back
these are 80 c10 manifolds



these might work installed flipped side to side so the outlet was towards the front
the exhaust gases won't know the difference
these are 80 grand prix

you know, right that engines are often offset from the factory? nothing wrong with it, just a way to get a little more room.
