Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
Yup bonehead mistake of leaving the battery connected and well looking for a hei dizzy now lol. Any of you guys have any advise on what will work for my 235?
Consequently, today instead of mechanic to do lists, I did electrical. I installed a 77 c10 wiring harness and wired it up to the stock ignition switch.

How do the vise grips fit in? Was it still hot when you walked in?

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
I had the positive terminal connected temporary to the starter + with the vise grips. I left them on and it fryed. It must of happen last week when I last worked on it. I drove it in the garage and then a neighbor stopped by and I got distracted and forgot to take off the grips.

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
I would have figured that the points would have fried and broken the connection to ground before the coil blew up.
It looks like there are small cap (with external coil) and big cap HEIs for that engine. You can also get a stock distributor converted to electronic from http://www.lindertech.com/bhrs/gm_6_dist_elec_conv.htm

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
google 'chevy 6 cylinder hei distributor' and you will find new ones for $79 to $150
if you want to go the junk yard path look for any hei stuck into a 250 motor should be a coil on cap, 1 wire connection, easy peasy

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
Thanks ya I grabbed a cheaply off eBay for $60. It's for a 250 but I read about doing some mods to make it work. The "235" ones were double the price. The cool think is my wiring harness is off a 77 c10 so it's already wired for hei.
I was at the junkyard all day yesterday and found 1 Chevy 6 banger in the whole yard! Obviously the dizzy was already gone but I'm sick of seeing all the 350s under the hoods lol

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
I left the key on all night after doing some electrical testing. The next morning the top had blown off the coil. It is a pertonics conversion with there high output coil.

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
I had no clue that was even something that could happen. You leave your key on and the coil blows?

Re: Walked into the garage today to a burst coil
Wow
thank for sharing........ I just have a hard time believing this could happen.? But I can't dispute the picture. It looks like a coil blown up.... It's a blessing that's all that went up being that close to a fuel source (gasoline) in a building ...........................Sp .
