Dumb A$$ Moment
First big mistake on putting back together. Welded 6 mirror mounting holes, on each door closed. With the windows DOWN
Rolled windows up, to find major pitting in the glass, from welding. Checked on LMC, they sell a window assembly, and a window. Can I just replace the window?? Or do I need the window assembly?? Expensive dumb a$$ moment. |

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
If it was me doing the work, you probably wouldn't be able to even roll the windows up.
Don't feel too bad... just a few days ago I discovered that if you get in a hurry and have a drill with a titanium bit in it while carrying it under your arm, you can make your new paint job look just like it was keyed in a parking lot!

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
Hewww, That helps ease the pain, the glass is about 1/2 the price of the assembly, and I was so happy with how the welded up holes had turned out. Another lessen learned. It really surprised me how deep the window glass pitted.

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
protecting the glass is a hard lesson to learn.
been there done that on camaro glass. blankets, cardboard, sheet plastic, plywood i use anything to protect the glass now. i work in a 2 car garage so the other car gets covered before any kind of sparks fly. i try too be real mindfull of where i'm throwing sparks with the grinder cause they can bounce and still ruin something out of sight. of course allways being carefull not to start a fire.

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
My Uncle Restored a 1958 Ford Ranchero and learned the hard way about protecting the glass...when he got it all painted and finished putting it back together, the first time he had t9 drive in the rain, the windshield shredded his wiper blades, not to mention the rust stains on his new white paint...the grindings embedded themselves into the surface of the glass.....ouch!
Lesson learned! Ben |

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
We've all been there...I almost burned a VW project to the ground welding a front 1/4. Taught me to always have an extinguisher handy.
Maybe we need a new thread for "mistakes"?? |

Re: Dumb A$$ Moment
Holes actually came out good, has been about 25 years since I have done any body welding. Fixed rusted floors in my 70 Buick Electra 225 conv. By the time I get the floor, bed, of this truck fixed I should be pretty good.
Yea, I know it happens, but sure feel stupid for a day or two. |
