My 66 C10 has new paint
Haven't posted for a while with many irons in the fire but the 66 is maybe going to see the streets this summer. A week of color sanding and polishing and the new bed wood can be installed. I assembled all the sheet metal to verify alignment and fit and painted it together to avoid any panel color mismatch. Now it comes back apart for the hardware and weatherstrip. The cab and complete front end minus the hood was from a rust free and dent free 60k mile 1966 C30 camper from Kansas so it was a dream build original floors, rockers, and cab corners. Even the cab over camper with about 1 inch clearance above rood panel provided a perfect rust free and dent free roof. How many 60's trucks still have the original factory gutter seam sealer in place that was just a flawless time capsule. Had to add the big back window since it had started its life with a camper access hole cut through the cab back panel anyway. Factory air and Custom Cab too. Hood had been walked on from cleaning the camper window but a mint original paint hood was found from a local shed stored C60 farm truck that created the perfect addition to the rust free clip. The tailgate was a brand new 66 take off and the box was a mint original Arizona rust and dent free fleetside swb under an old camper shell. She is sweet.

Re: My 66 C10 has new paint
Sooo nice! The finish line is within sight now. That surely must motivate a bit.
The saddle paint looks great! Well done Mark. Are you squirting the paint yourself? Just curious how you did your tailgate letters. I've been contemplating making a rigid masking die or template for that purpose to mimic the factory look. Last edited by oem4me; 03-05-2016 at 01:03 PM. |

Re: My 66 C10 has new paint
Thanks everyone. I know I have been watching LT1 burb as we seem to have the same busy schedule so our trucks are about on the same assembly line.
Its my old 1st body shop building that I still own but my buddy Joe is the custom painter these days. It's a PPG base clear and their version crossover of the oem formula of code #555 saddle gold and the GM white. That said a clearcoat paint makes it look like an ice coating when it is sanded and polished so the color is close but far superior for gloss than a oem factory laquer job in the day could ever be. I also believe it makes the metallic POP and create more of a fawn color than what the 60's saddle gold appeared like. I have so much NOS to go on this truck as all the trim, grille, bezels, emblems, tailgate hardware, even the vent windows were new old stock GM. Floor mat and seat cloth was also NOS along with steering wheel ring and cap. Even have a NOS whitewall spare date coded 1965 mounted on the wheel to set up in the bed with 5 NOS hub caps. But I built it to enjoy so it will be driven down the interstate on nice days.

Re: My 66 C10 has new paint
Bruce, I'll tell you the secret to making those tailgate letters really correct in paint and what GM would have tried to make their line stencil painting to have it come out like. First I get a set of black vinyl CHEVROLET letters and then I paint the ivory base color over the center area of the tailgate stamped lettering. I also tape off and paint the area between the chrome mouldings at the same time. Let it dry long enough to install the vinyl letters where I want them. Then spray the body color over the entire truck as uniformity between panels especially with metallic paints is what I look for. After the base color is flashed off, I remove the vinyl lettering carefully and they come off easy if you dont bake your base color in the booth. I then shoot all the clear coat over the panels and it just melts the two colors together like it was under glass. If you wonder why I said to use "black" vinyl letters it is because you can see the finished look so much easier where the letter will line up on that newly sprayed white strip of color. Thanks, Mark

Re: My 66 C10 has new paint
Funny thing Mark, we pretty well have the same builds going but 1 year apart. You will have more NOS parts but we will maybe have the only 2 555 trucks running NOS grills. I am just finishing up blocking with 600, hoping to be in the booth in a few weeks.
PS, am stealing your vinyl letter ideal, have been wondering how I was going to do that. |
