60 Chevrolet pickup 235 not running right
Hi everyone, I recently finished the restoration part of the 60 and the 235 that is in it doesn't run right. It's a '55 235 with a one barrel Rochester. We had it running fairly well but it had a slight miss once every 4-5 seconds. So we decided to swap plugs since they looked close to fouled, and we took a little sandpaper to the distributor points. We put it back together and sometimes it would start and sometimes not. Once running it ran rough. Then after adjusting the points to .019. After that we fired it back up. It idled well but once we brought up the rpms, it would act like it had some rev limiter at somewhere between 2000-2500 rpms. We did notice there was no vacuum advance working and it seems to act like the timing is off when it revs up.
Thanks Nate |

Re: 60 Chevrolet pickup 235 not running right
Did you rebuild the 235? If you did, did you set the flywheel to the correct timing with the engine? Another problem could be the distributer is not set all the way in the oil pump.

Re: 60 Chevrolet pickup 235 not running right
When I got the engine, they said it was a new rebuild. I did put the flywheel on though and the 3 pegs from the back of the engine had a little offset between each other. I do know that it is correct d since the mark on the flywheel lines up with the indicator on the bellhousing. It has run pretty close to perfect before we made those adjustments. It just had that little misfire. I'll take a look to see if the distributor is sitting all the way down. Thanks

You don't Need vacuum advance. Under acceleration the vacuum advance is useless anyhow so you can mark that off your list. I'm wondering if valves May have something to do with it....little misfire here and there tells me a valve isn't sealing right. Timing that's way off can do that to. You sure no plug wires are crossed?

I didn't think so. Firing order is 153624, right? I put them on like that. Plus I think it would have to be right since it idles really quiet

Re: 60 Chevrolet pickup 235 not running right
My GMC 305E V6 had two plug wires crossed......all the way home it popped sputtered and back fired.....then it got quiet and ran good....then it started that same deal up again. Ended up being two plug wires crossed and some tight valves. Also a distributor problem which I never did figure out...slapped a new one in and said the heck with it. Been running fine ever since. I'd put it at TDC.....not going by the flywheel, but with a spark plug out and cranking over by hand with a screw driver in the plug hole....and then I would see where the rotor is pointing. If it's pointing at the number one plug terminal then timing is probably not the main issue.

Re: 60 Chevrolet pickup 235 not running right
I have solid lifters on it. I'll check for TDC like you guys were saying. So if my distributor isn't in all the way, how do I fix that? I'm kinda new to that part of the motor.
Thanks Nate |
