Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

I've been searching for a few months now for a 3/4 ton truck project, and really the only stipulations I have are that I want rear coil springs and factory roof marker lights.

That said, it seems like NONE of the 3/4 tons have marker lights. Are they really that uncommon?? I see them on 1/2 tons every now and again (my K10 has them), but almost never 3/4 tons.

Cab lights weren't a popular option back in the day. I personally yhink they're very cool

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

There's a thread out there somewhere about this. And more than one instance of guys buying matching colored body panels and putting them all back on the truck and now it's all one color w/out having to pay a painter. I have since put on a matching red bed.

Boy you can say that again!
Early on in my truck addiction days I made the mistake of building this short step side with a Cheyenne Super cab with the lights. I had if for sale for over 6 months with the price dropping constantly, I couldn't give that truck away!
I ended up trading it off for a Plasma cutter and was happy to do so.

I have 4 K20's now and 2 have factory cab marker lights. Seem to be more common on the 4x4's and C30's in my experience.

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

I love em. I actually like the raised bump on the cab versions. If any one local had one for sale at a reasonable price I would buy it to graft on to a cab (well I would have to have it done, I would destroy a perfectly good cab if I tried it myself lol).

I wonder if the gaskets are available. I think you can still get the round lights from GM

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

I think cab lights would be nice, kind of a less than silly form of "day time running lights."

I don't think I'll put those onto my truck though.....maybe the next truck I get.

That is tempting, I am not interested in cab swapping a truck but I would certainly be down for a roof skin swap

I honestly don't like the way these trucks look without them

From what I know, they were standard on C30 trucks '69+, per federal law. And yes, they do seem much more common on 4x4 trucks.

The "fireman's hat" style lens was introduced midway through 1970 model year production (January 1st, 1970) and was used by GM until 1991 on the square body trucks. They are still available both from GM and most local NAPAs can get them at a decent price. I installed a set on my '71 C10, non-original so no roof bumps, I think they were $15 each.

I put the factory clearance lamps on a standard roof panel before. It worked out great and looked just as good.

Two 3/4 ton 4x4's I've owned had them, I would think that the 1/2 ton's would be more rare?

I love that GMC!!

I've confirmed two 4x4 1/2 tons via SPID to be factory original cab lights, my '69 (SPID below) and a '70 I once went and looked at (and wish I had bought!), but those are the only ones I know of for sure.

Seems many of the other cabs I've seen with the raised pad roof started out life as C30s.

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

I really like those five factory lights on top of the cab. Just sold a 72 C30 Mohome and a 72 GMC 3500 utility body with big welder - hated to see those cab lights go. Way cool in my book.

Many C 30s came with them - other than that the lights seemed to be a special order option. The factory cab with the "fire hat" type lens actually has 5 raised/flat mounting sites on the roof, so it was a different roof metal stamping. Still have two or three.

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

From the factory less than 10% had them. By 1980 I think about 50% seemed to! Most were aftermarket, Yankee77 style (or whatever they're called).

Re: Roof marker lights, very uncommon??

The tear drop Yankee 77 lights were factory from 60? to 68.
69-70 were round hockey puck designed, can't remember if they had raised pads in truck roof.
71-72 were fire hat design with raised pads in truck roof.

Not all C-30 trucks had clearance lights.

I have a 70 K20 with the raised pads in the roof.

I think it was a requirement after a certain year for dually's. I can point to a couple 71/72 C30 SRW's that don't have cablights.

Raised pads started in '69, my K10 is a Dec '68 build date and it has them.

Hadn't thought about SRW C30, that's a good point!

Funny thing was they were a $29.00 option and it required a totally different cab. GM was taking a hit on that option.
