Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Well, yes and no.
I have not had the time to develop one on my own since I am still working 80 hrs a week every week. What I do have to offer for the '60-'62's is in sort of a kit form put together with help from a couple of members. I don't currently have pictures of what I offer, I need to do that. Here are a couple of threads from the guys that helped me with this. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=657913 http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=683028 It is a little more involved than for the '63-'66's but I have sold several to other members.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Ahhh. OK. I may could make that work on mine...
I have a 84 donor truck so I'm gonna swap the 305 outta that along with the cross member, steering box and steering column hopefully and all the brake components... And speaking of, the 60-62 power brake booster plate you make. Will a 84 C10 unit work on that??

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
No the '73-'87 truck boosters are not compatible with any of my booster brackets. They can not be used as the factory mounting brackets are riveted to the booster. There is a list of compatible boosters in the for sale thread. That list is also included with every booster bracket.
Here in post #70. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=357542&page=3

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Hey Captain! Just wanted to confirm my receipt of the bracket, flange and tube. Excellent quality and workmanship! Thanks! Quick question on installation, do you recommend welding the tube to the original shaft and/or drilling the tube and shaft and install a bolt through? Should I install 2 bolts to be safe? Also, is it recommended to install a u-joint to ensure the steering shaft lines up with the new box? I am using the original steering column with no tilt. Thanks again!!

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
One grade 8, 1/4" or 5/16" bolt should be sufficient and my preferred attachment method. Welding would optional and I would not weld continuous. Two good stitches 180* apart.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Got my plate in the mail today, I'll have to get this thing right though when I install it. Especially since the original Pump has been long since removed, gotta love full restorations. Thanks again brother

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
My Steering arm is longer than my stock type idler arm. Think that'll be an issue?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
It isn't ideal but it will work. My Suburban has been that way for over 120,000 miles.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
then only thing removed from the steering assy was the steering gear/pitmanarm. what i discovered last night was the ac delco r1500 89 ps gearbox has a tapered shaft for the pitman arm however the ac delco 89 pitman arm hole is not tapered. Should it be? It seems as though it should be... At this point im going to return the parts and go with a non metric unit and get metric to standard hose adapters...what is the years recommended for the ps gearbox?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Yes the pitman arm to the sector shaft is a tapered fit.
As far as I know the '68-'86 C series and '87-'91 R series steering boxes all interchange. The '68-'79 should have SAE style fittings. From about 1980 and up will be Metric with an O-ring. I have no idea why you are having this issue. As I said in one of my PM's with you, I have not used a steering box that new. Without any pictures it is even more difficult to help troubleshoot.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
I returned the 89 2wd r1500 gear and pitman arm eating 50$ in shipping and went to my local yard and picked an 86 2wd suburban and all bolted up fine.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
I am sorry to hear you lost $50.00 but I am glad you solved the issue. I will have to check into the '87-'91 R series steering box and pitman arm further.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Hey Capt. The steering box looks the same as the 96 Grand Cherokee. I only ask because I did a conversion on my 68 Chevelle from the original Saginaw steering box to a 96 grand Cherokee which was the same box just different gear ratio and it bolted right on, I can see that the bracket would be needed for this but could it be a direct bolt on with the bracket?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
I have no idea if a '96 Cherokee steering box will work, but I doubt it.

I did the same thing on my 66 Chevelle LS swap car. I know for sure the box mounts are the same, not sure about the travel of the pitman arm but I'm thinking that the correct truck pitman arm should be easy to swap out. I got my Cherokee box cheap from rock auto so when I get ready to do my 63 I'm going to give it a shot. I love the Cherokee box in the Chevelle.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
I did a quick search and the '96-'98 Cherokee steering box mounts to the inside of the frame and has only 3 bolt holes. Not going to work......

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Ok then. I didn't realize the mounts are different. On the research I did for that swap everyone said Saginaw had basically one box casing. Guess I'll use a normal one. Thanks for the research and I am looking forward to ordering a few of your products when I decide to start on this truck.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
I wanted to post this pic here so those of you making this conversion or contemplating it, can see what a power steering upgrade should look like. This is a very nice installation by member NVS-C10. He has a build thread if you would like to see more of his nice truck.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
Does spacing the box off the frame have any effect on the steering center position? as in does it turn sharper one way than it does the other?
I have all the steering linkage and gear box off of a 72 I plan to install. |

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates
It does affect the turning radius initially. But once you have a wheel alignment, that issue should be taken care of.
