I'm building a 454 and waht to use the short water pump.
My ? is, will a 70 chevelle 454 have a short pump and will it work. My son works at Auto Zone and they have a 70 chevelle 454 water pump for $24.99. If you look up a pump for a 72 402 in a PU is $85.99. HELP

I may be out to lunch (since I don't own a BB) but I thought the water pumps were all the same for SB and BB? In that case it all depends on whether or not you want a short one, a long one, accessory driven vs. electrical, and what quality.
I believe the long water pumps didn't start showing up until the mid to late '70s. Someone correct me if I'm wrong... I'd never go for cheapest pump in my opinion. I equate it to buying a used radiator, or a cheap fuel pump. I'd always go with something proven, and what will work best for my application. If your water pump goes it'll overheat your engine quick...you don't want to end up spending $2000 for the chance to test a $24.99 pump...

A 70 chevelle 454 would have a long water pump. I think they
started in 69 with the alternator on the passenger side. None of the accesssories ps,ac and alternator brackets are the same on a long vs short water pump set up. Also most of the pullies are different.. I also agree with the others don't get cheap when it comes to a water pump. BB chevy's cost way too much to ruin over few $$$'s. Hope this helps.

Any short water pump that fits a 402 will fit a 454-502-396.

I just went through this last week. I bought a rebuilt pump from napa store for about 33.00. They were the only people that still stocks a rebuilt water pump. I have the part number in shop if you need it. I have a 71 402 chevy. Which is a short pump.
