Shoulder belts in our trucks

There are a lot of threads about using the existing B pillar bolts and adding a shoulder belt (71 C10 for me). I was looking to do the belt that connects to the seat belts so you can use it either way. My muscle car in the day had that setup. Someone's reply hit home though about the fact that it's just like a seat belt and has no retraction to keep you or your loved ones from hitting the dash or breaking a bone. Also the fact that the seat belts are, in my case, 45 years old. So I'm back to the idea of aftermarket setups. BUT, I just sold a 71 Suburban that had them and they sucked in that when putting them on if you don't pull GENTLY and steadily, the belt comes to a screeching halt. Also, the retractors needed help getting the belts back in. So my question is: Is there a difference in quality between suppliers and if so which ones are best? You can't put a price on safety. Thanks.

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

The ones I have are from Classic Parts and are just like you describe. hard to pull because they lock too easily, and don't retract well at all. Subbed because I want to know also!

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

Bought mine from Brothers and have same issue with sticking if pulled too fast. Have learned to slow it down a bit, strap it in then fire up my 402 biggie!

I have a set on the way from seat belts plus so I can let you know in a few days. I haven't read anything bad about them yet.

What size did you end up ordering they have 60", 74" & 90"?

Never mind I was looking at the wrong belts.

Their site is kind of confusing. What shoulder belt did you order? Thanks

I ordered the 1968-72 chevy truck bench seat lap belt. The part # is CHT6872-BENCH These are the only ones that actually say they have a bracket to mount them with the fuel tank still in the cab. The retractable lap belts I ordered from LMC didn't work with my fuel tank so I found these. They have a different number for bucket seats also.

I agree, as I also ordered these belts to properly fit around the fuel tank in my 69 with bench seat. They installed just fine and work as expected.

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

I currently have a set out of an 80s truck, and have had them for about 10 years, but the black fabric paint has worn off and the blue kinda clashes with my green interior. Recently I scored a set of belts out out of the parts yard, that came out of the back seat of a passenger van. I mocked them up and the mechanism works as it's supposed to. I had to modify the length of the female end, and a little mod on the high mount for the shoulder portion. They will go in when I get the time to get into my cab work. Hopefully this weekend

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

I have the LMC three point setup and I like them except for the part where you're putting them on, if you pull them too fast, like you say - they lock. That's a safety feature I guess but it does get old.

Once the belt is adjusted to where you need it, it's less troublesome.

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

I bought an NOS set from this site for my 72. The male end of the belt is supposed to be pushed into the rubber/plastic cover that attaches at the top. But I usually just let it hang. It's not long enough to get caught anywhere and causes no problems.

Just wondering... My 70 C30 Longhorn does not have shoulder belts, never did. Is it against the law to not have them?

However it came from the factory is what is the minimum required by law. If it had lap belts originally then it has to have at least or more than that now. You can go more just not less.

I also am using belts from LMC (38-2246-BL). Note that BL=black color. Yes, if pulled too fast, they lock. You get used to it after awhile. Brackets included allowed the belts to be mounted with factory tank behind bench seat.

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

Those Morris Classic belts look nice, a little spendy but much better color selection. They actually have the dark brown to match a saddle interior. Very tempting. Do they lock up bad when putting them on?

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

I'm considering the Seatbelts Plus 3 points myself. Anybody know the proper length for a middle lap belt? I have a stock bench seat now, but will probably be replacing it with a 90s bench at some point.

Re: Shoulder belts in our trucks

I have had no problems at all with my Morris classic belts locking up and they are Americam made and you can even talk to Mr Morris in person if you have questions .He is a member on Team Chevelle and commonly answers questions over there about their belts .Im surprised he is not a vendor here but Matt's Classic Bowtie is a vendor here and is a little less expensive than buying direct ,that is where I bought mine.He also stands behind his product after the sale if you do have questions or problems .

I have the Morris belts and they do lock when you pull them out, but I suspect that it may be because my retractor is at a slight angle. I just installed them as they were when I got them out of the box, but one is at a slight angle compared to level and the other is level and I think the one that is level does not have the locking problem. I haven't driven the Suburban enough to really get out there and fix it and see if that changes anything, I am still doing a bunch of other stuff to it and other projects right now.
