My 71-72 fuel pedal conversion

Just thought I'd share my conversion since I've read about several other peoples and get so much help here. Not a great write up like others have given but hopefully it helps someone.

As you know the earlier trucks had a floor mounted pedal, my 1970 was no exception. I scored a pedal assembly from a 72 local for $10 and went to installing it in my truck. I started with what everyone else starts with..



I first pulled the plate off from the inside, and of course I was left with a bunch of holes that needed filled/covered. The one hole I retained was the original upper left mounting hole for the pedal. In other write ups people have used the right upper hole, but it seemed to work out for me to use the left which also allowed me to use the full bracket and not have to bend the pedal rod any (I'll show you in a minute).


So this is where people might not agree with my method. I filled the top two holes but I didn't want to have to fill a bunch of holes where the original pedal mounted..so I cut some plates out of 18ga that covered the inside and outside. The outside plate is shown below, I literally traced the original plate from the inside but elongated it to allow for the new pedal mount.


The inside I also used a piece of 18ga to make a mount, I just traced the plastic piece of the assembly and drilled 1/2" holes so that the plastic piece snaps in and locates itself (hopefully that makes sense).


And this is the result, I wanted to keep the entire bracket assembly because I liked having a shield over the cable. I have no idea if the stock 71-72 cable will work because the assembly I bought didn't have it and I'm using an adjustable unit.


It provides an even 2.25" gap between the pedals. Hope that helps someone out, or at least gives food for thought.

I did something similar, put a 71 throttle pedal assembly in a 69 cab. I just used the interior plastic piece as a template after pulling the nut plate and drilled out the holes. Then, I made an underhood nut plate like you did, and glued it to the firewall. I would like to see some pictures of your pedal installation, as I had to bend mine to make it fit right.

Sorry, that last pic was supposed to be of the assembly installed but I must have mixed up the links. I'll fix it when I get to my computer.

I didn't have to modify anything actually, the bracket fits right up against the firewall and the arm sits in a position to where I can put a hole in the firewall for a cable and it be a straight shot.
