Got my HEI distributor installed today.
Can't tell much of a difference yet, but I really haven't hit the road with it, other than a test drive.
Next up is the internally regulated alternator.

BTW any tips to timing it by ear?

Tip 1. Don't.
Go borrow a timing light, I can almost guantee you that you'll never get it if you try to do it by light. Granted, you can make it run, but you'll never get the best power and gas milage out of it timing by ear. For those who disagree, take a light and set it to 8*, then to 10* see if you can distinguish the difference between the two timings, I would be surprised if you could

Set it where it starts easy they take it out and see if it pings . If not advance it a little at a time until it starts to ping -then set it back to the previous setting.

I got lucky with mine I installed at work on monday and set it where it sounded good, put the light on it and BAM! 7 degrees pretty lucky!
