Help me i.d. this engine
I'm hoping someone here can help me I.D. this engine. Bought this truck three weeks ago and the previous owner said the engine was replaced with one out of a 1974 GM vehicle. (He can't remember) I've tried to look it up on the interweb, but keep getting conflicting information.
Is the engine a 350, or some other size? (Thanks in advance!) "TO416CMA" "14L196828" Here is the carb numbers if they help with ID also... |

Re: Help me i.d. this engine
You've probably been here -- the A in CMA does not match but the L in the eng vin looks like a 350.

Re: Help me i.d. this engine
Can you get a couple of good pics of the harmonic balancer? That might help with identification. I can tell the 350 and 305 apart using the harmonic balancer but I'm not that familiar with the 283 or 400.

Re: Help me i.d. this engine
Thanks a lot Bruceman, that's exactly the info I was looking for..
The main reason is that I'm in need of a new set of headers, and full exhaust This is a budget build, so if anybody has recommendations for either headers or exhaust that won't break the bank, please post! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Help me i.d. this engine
If your cast iron exhaust manifolds are intact I'd surely use them.

unless you are going to fork out big bucks scrap the header idea. inexpensive headers are a source for leaks and unless you have the "motor" that needs them they are a waste of money. if your manifolds are not cracked just resurface them and bolt them back on-WITHOUT gaskets. as long as the head surface is clean and straight you won't have any leaks. before i get trashed for my comment-i work in a muffler shop (31+ years) and thats how we have always done them.

Re: Help me i.d. this engine
Sounds like you got it figured out.
For everyone's future reference, I found this link to be helpful for figuring out all kinds of Chevy casting numbers. Cranks, heads, blocks, intake and exhaust manifolds, etc. http://outintheshop.com/faq/casting/castings2.html |

This brings up another question... The outlet on these manifolds point straight down (as opposed to curving toward the back) Are those the correct manifolds for a 2WD truck? I may be getting the LMC exhaust and want to make sure we don't have to send it back. Thanks again for the help. TeamEstep- That site it great! |
