Manuel to Power Steering

I understand the changing out of the Gear Box's and the strg. pitman arm but what needs to change from there up to the strg. wheel? speaking of the Column. Mine has a one piece strg. shaft, I think I read somewhere that Power strg setup has a two piece shaft? thanks in advance

You can take it apart at the rag joint. That's what I did to my 68

Nothing else needs to change. I have a 67 column in my 70 and its one piece. I simply swapped the gear box and pitman arm.

A long time Member & friend here "________" told me he has never seen a single shaft from these trucks always has two shafts that he has ever seen from these trucks and he has been Parting these for 25 yrs. On my 1st drawing from the rag joint towards the strg. wheel between the 25" and 5" is where he says it comes apart. Any body else want to take a Swing at this. Here is some pics. thanks in advance

That's a two piece shaft. just heat the bottom part of the shaft where the those two little holes are filled with epoxy a little bit and the shafts will slide apart. this will allow you to slide the bottom piece up to the correct length. Then either weld it or my choice is to drill a 1/4 inch hole all the way thru and put a good bolt through it.

I understand it has a collapse'able lower shaft. Again 1st drawing at where the 25" & the 5" marks meet is where I was told it separates from one another. Can anybody confirm this or show me some pics of a power strg. column if there is such a thing.

Here's a power steering column you can see #25. that's the coupler your talkin about. Bros 70 is factory power steering. here's a pic.

Ok, technically it's a two piece shaft, because it has the collapsible mechanism. Mine is just like yours. Like mentioned above, take it apart at the tag joint and replace the manual box with the power box and mount and plumb the pump and you're done.

The pic that frankslagoon posted shows what I call the two piece shaft, it has the joint just below the column housing and the short shaft that attaches to the rag joint.

My 70 with manual steering and a 3OTT was like the pic that frankslagoon showed, from the factory. When I converted to an automatic trans, I used the column from a 67 because it came with the transmission. I then converted to power steering later using the same column, which is like yours. It is a straightforward swap, just replace the manual box with the power box and install/plumb the pump, unless you are concerned about factory correct, then you may need to change the column to the style in the pic that frankslagoon posted. What year is your truck?

I went through the same thing on my truck. I had a non-tilt one piece steering column with a mechanical steering box. The one piece steering columns look like they are two pieces but do not come apart at the top.

I went to the salvage and got a power steering box with pitman arm as well as the collapsible steering shaft then bought a CPP tilt steering column. I regret the CPP tilt steering column, real low quality but it was the same price as what the salvage yards wanted for old worn out tilt columns that were the wrong color.

Yah I get the CPP parts thing. I bought also a tilt column 3 x's and sent back 3 x's. Came an open box with missing parts and looked cheaply. Later found it was made in CHINE wow don't you just hate those words China made.

I don't know if this is a pic of your truck or not. But that is a manual transmission (3spd) colum that someone rigged to work on a automatic trans.

I used to factory 3ott column and a 76ish? power steering box. Everything bolted up in the stock location with no adjustment. I did use a Rag joint repair kit and replace the "rag" part of the joint since both from the parts I used were worn and 40 years old.

I had a '67 w/Manual steering. I bought a stripped '70 that had PS from factory. I unbolted the manual box and bolted the PS box into place. Reattached the rag joint and the Pittman Arm. I bolted the PS pump/brackets from the donor onto the engine and the reattached the hoses. Then I drove away. It was just that simple.

I agree palallin, these are pretty simple. I helped a friend with his power steering on a 66 Mustang and the complexity made my head explode.

This is what you get when Past Owners think with there (well I will keep it clean here) a$$ or the brain they were born with (oooo) that's nothing. Not real fun spending a hole lot of money fixing STUPID stuff!!!
