1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
My 1971 pickup is having cooling issues. Its from Arizona and has a large aluminum radiator with an electric fan on it. The fan died. I was wondering if I just put a regular fan driven by the water pump pulley would that be enough? I live in upstate New York so tremendous outside heat is not an issue. The pump sits 9 inches from the radiator. Any and all suggestions for this problem are appreciated.

Re: 1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
If you go with the stock fan get a fan shroud too or it won't work at all. Make sure the fan is inside the shroud about 1/2" or a little more. Again if its outside the shroud it won't work very well.

Re: 1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
I've got a 71 GMC and recently switched to an electric fan. It cooled OK with the stock fan and no shroud even here in Texas, but I switched because the constant drag of the pulley driven Fan on the motor.
My electric fan setup has two fans. I even disconnected one of the fans and its still cools just fine in the heat with full AC running. I would recommend replacing the electric fan because my motor revs easily now. In short, it has noticeably more high end power.

Re: 1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
You might be able to run just a fan up there. I grew up near Jamestown... it flat out does not get hot there...
*IF* you run a fan only, it needs to be spaced 1" from the radiator, otherwise it won't work well. If you do use a shroud, the fan just needs to be about 1/2 in / 1/2 out, spacing from the radiator doesn't matter.

Re: 1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
you can, but make sure to use a shroud as it will make a lot of difference on that application.

Re: 1971 Chevy pickup cooling problem
If you've already got the relays, temp sensor, and everything else for the electric, I'd just replace the electric, as a good fan, shroud, and clutch will add up.
