Garage Shelving, what are people using?
I am in need of some sturdy shelving for my home garage without spending a fortune. Any suggestions?

Chase,
I buy pallet rack shelving from places that are upgrading. The stuff is super heavy duty. I use 2x6 or 2x8 treated material to floor the shelves. It's what I store engines, transmissions, body panels and all of my heavy parts. |

Re: Garage Shelving, what are people using?
Pallet rack shelving is awesome. I bought some at an auction here near me for my shop, but I only had come across the 48"x96" ones so far. I am limited to about 30" deep for my home garage to still have room for the wifey to park. It probably wouldn't be terrible to cut some down to fit. Thanks for the Suggestions!

Re: Garage Shelving, what are people using?
Here you go, please pardon the mess. I have other shelves that were used in a dealership parts department I bought at an auction pretty cheap. They are adjustable and in 20 years of use I've never adjusted them.

Looks pretty stout, thanks for the pics! I think I am leaving towards 2x4 construction.

Re: Garage Shelving, what are people using?
Sorry no pics, but in my old house I built shelves with 2 stacked 2X4's for uprights, then cut slots in them for 3/4" plywood shelves. Lots of work cutting grooves, but they were nice, and pretty inexpensive. Similar to this, http://www.guidepatterns.com/wp-cont...lves-Plans.jpg
I'd do it again if I buy another house, but would prefer to find an auction for shelving from a business going out of business if possible. |

I second the wood/plywood shelves.
My Dad's old shop (A New Holland dealership) had wood shelves for 40+ years. Worked just fine. |

I have picked up a lot of steel clip shevling over the years from business' moving or closing down. Very versitile and adjustable with clips, A mix of Republic and Lyon steel shelving 18" x 36" line my shop. check out an industrial surplus shop or auctions.

Re: Garage Shelving, what are people using?
What I plan to do in the future:
Wood, 2x6 boards, and build my own from the ground up, made to exact dimensions, to store all my parts and tools and do so via maximizing storage space with what I have. For the time being: Once the truck is running, I'll sell off some gear and clear out the space a bit more, and run 14 foot 2x6's across my two widely spaced plastic shelves to maximize storage space there and allow my mower to fit between the plastic shelves and under those boards. Why 2x6's? That's the largest size my miter saw will cut. |
