Re: Rods 57
Anyone have an opinion on the rear cross sill. Originally it was tacked to the bed sides, i am sure for stability. so the question is do you tack it again or just bolt it? whats your thoughts?

Re: Rods 57
Very good question - subscribing for ideas here. I have mine bolted but there are some areas on both ends that you either have leave it unbolted, or leave some bolt heads exposed (unless you reach WAY up into the stake pockets). Mine seems like it is going to rattle to much without securing it somehow. My whole bed frame is welded together and it wouldn't be practical to weld the frame to the bed sides.

Re: Rods 57
just going back a page or 2 to where you were having contamination issues with the air. I have installed an electric auto drain on my tank which is wired to the shop lights. that way it only drains when the lights are on-when you are in the shop basically. this really helped with moisture when using the sandblasting cabinet. the drain is adjustable for length of drain and frequency of drain cycle. it does sorta scare the sh@%t outta guys that don't know it is there. especially if they happen to be standing next to the tank, haha.
I have had issues in the past with contaminants while painting and came to the conclusion that my air lines and hoses were to blame. I use my shop for mechanical repairs mostly, with some bodywork blitzes from time to time, and I was using my regular air hoses and regulators etc when painting. bad idea. the shop hoses had contaminants in the hoses that came out when spraying. I have dedicated paint hoses and regs/filters etc to use for painting now. no more issues. I ran some cleaner through the shop hoses and was quite surprised to find what came out. another thing I have seen on these forums is guys that use newspaper for masking. it works but is covered in fine "dust", for lack of a better word, that gets blown off onto the fresh painted surface as you are spraying. that masking paper may seen expensive until you gotta clean up a mess on the otherwise great looking paint job. ok, end of rant. your truck stuff looks great, by the way. good luck with the back. take it easy man. |

Re: Rods 57
On your paint booth ideas, one thing i have done in the past is to make up a 2x4 frame the same height as a furnace filter and as wide as the garage door. Then staple a row of filters to the frame, place the frame in the open garage door opening and let the door down on it. You will have cross flow ventilation that way. For respirator air keep an eye out for a cpapp machine. Some guys know them as a snore machine. You wear them at night to help with sleep apnea. Anyway, they are just a supply of fresh ambient air through a small fan in a machine out to a face piece. You could place the machine out in some fresh air and just run a long hose to your face piece inside the booth. Better than just a filter mask. Run the hose together with your paint gun air hose, taped every so often, so you only have to deal with one rats nest. Paint fumes kill.
Nice looking shop. I like what youre doing with the truck too. Looks good. Love the color. Like you dipped it in plastic. Good job on the paint, smooth. Have you painted lots before? Nice to see real paint, not just flat black or fake patina, cant wait for that trend to finish. Back in the day there were lots of primered hotrods driving around but that was because guys couldnt afford to paint. Nowadays guys paint stuff and then buff the nice new paint down so it looks "old" again. Dont seem right to me, Just a personal opinion though. Hey, keep up the good work and please keep posting pics for us guys who are laid up and cant work on our own stuff. |

Re: Rods 57
I notice that you have the firewall poly'd off. just a heads up for when the colour goes on, make sure to seal it off from the bottom side as well or the overspray will find it's way onto the underside of the poly, like onto the firewall if it is finish coated.
doesn't it feel good to be almost ready for paint? been there, not on this project though. |

Made a design change too, differnt valve covers.
