How does a 68 haul on a car dolly? You know, the ones where the front tires are on the trailer and you take the drive shave out and the back tires are on the ground.

I'll be goin 10 hours away fron Springfield, MO to DFW TX and i want some opinions. I'll be pulling it w/ my 68 c10 w/ the 250.
I just hauled a 67 w/ engine on a 2 axle trailer fine and had no problems.

pics would be nice of the hookup on the tires and some stories if you will

I'm not sure on a '67-72 trucks, but the full size Dodge truck I had was towed on a dolly from central California all the way to somewhere in the lower half of Florida with no problems being towed behind a early to mid 90's Ford "splash" Ranger (mini truck).
I would say it would be fine.

You need to physicly check to make sure your truck fits before signing anything. They won't fit opn most dollys.

Need to get the widest Dolly they have....

Just hauled a 66 international step van without any problems....only went 30 miles but good

Assuming you get a wide enough dolly---70+++inches, it will tow a truck fine. The basic width of a stock 2x4 truck with original size tires is right at 69". If the truck has rally's, is a 4x4, etc. add about 4 inches in width. I have my own dolly and we have towed Blazer, 4x4's trucks with not problem. Just make sure your tie down straps are big enough to accomodate the truck tires and also use a safety chain to secure the truck to the dolly. Some dolly's have a swivel capability which may or may not cause problems and may or may not require you to tie down your steering wheel to minimize front wheels turning on the dolly. Check out the instructions. The only problem I've seen with dolly's is backing them up-----avoid this at all costs as the truck back wheels and the dolly wheels never go in the same direction---EVER!! So avoid tight places---anticipate where and when to get gas etc. and you'll have no problem.

i dont know if youre planning to get a UHaul dolly but they say that the trucks wont fit on there yet ive towed a one ton one one of them ( with a ranger no less) you will have to let some air out of the tires so the straps will fit on there but yes technically it will be able to be towed that way. Dont mention to Uhaul what you want to tow they wont rent it to you if you tell them especially if the vehicle you are towing is uninsured and unregistered

I towed my 71, 600 miles with a u-haul dolly. The swivel will not work the tires on the truck being towed need to be able to turn, Had to stop and check the straps after making some tight turns. We did about 60 through the mountains of WV and VA to get home.

installed narrow rims and tires to fit on the dolly. the rims came off of a 3/4 ton dodge.

this is a wider dolly and can you lock the swivel down?

I need as much info from you guys as possiable. This will be my first time pulling anything that far ( the most i've ever hauled was a 15 ft ranger boat w/ 140hp johnson w/ my 87 jeep comanche) and then i hauled my 67 on a flat bed fro about 30 miles w/ my 68.

What do i need to look for and can i put that dolly in the back of the pickup on the way down there and then take it out on the way back?

Unless you're Hercules, you aren't going to put the dolly into the back of your truck---they are heavy and bulky.
The company you rent the dolly from will have tie down straps or chains that go over the front tires and keep the vehicle tied to the dolly. The instructions will tell you weather to tie the steering wheel or to leave it loose. You tow vehicle should have a 4 wire trailering lights connection to attach to the dolly. that's about it.

i'm makeing this harder than it really is aren't I?

With that thing empty for 400 miles is it going to wear me out bouncing behind me? and I doubt that i get instructions. It's a hole in the wall establishment that is well know here at home and The dolly i'm renting is Wide and looks heavy but i dunno. Keep goin guys! thanks

Towing with a dolly is much easier than using a trailer. There will be very little tongue weight since the weight of the towed vehicle is on the dolly. There should be some straps that will wrap around the tires and slip into a ratchet mechanism. Make sure the tires will hold air, if they loose air during the trip the straps will be loose. Also, there should be a safety chain that should wrap around the frame of the towed vehicle. DO NOT BACK UP and do not unhook the dolly with the vehicle on it. Watch how your tracking also, the dolly is much wider than your used to. Other than that, going down the freeway with it is a breeze.

Leave plenty of room between you & the vehicle ahead of you. You will be towing a 5,000 truck with another 5,000 lb truck. That is really a lot of weight to try and stop with those small drum brakes on a 68 1/2 ton.

I tow a dolly with a 3/4T and added disc brakes...then I added electric brakes to the dolly. I want this train to stop!
