Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Project Fix-a-Leak.

Radiator started leaking around the top seam. The radiator did not look to be in the best condition so I replaced it with an American Eagle 2 row with 1 inch tubes. PO had homemade fan guard/shroud, so I replaced it with a 3 inch chrome unit.

I also had a small oil leak from the back of the intake manifold. I removed the manifold and installed new gaskets. At the same time I installed cast aluminum valve covers and also a new distributor. Got it all finished up this morning for a Friday night and another Saturday afternoon cruise in. Test drive to town and back showed no oil leaks.

Working on cleaning up the paint, got the tail gate done. First time this has probably ever been done to this truck. Doesn't look to bad for 50 year old paint.

I replaced the trailing arm bushings on my '66 with polyurethane. It really tightened up the rear end.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Scraped out the flooring in my 66. Under the old rubber mats was what looked like tar paper that had baked into the floor. What a #@&% to remove.

Put down some Keep Cool insulation to quiet my tin can. Seems like a good product but after a few hours of using spray adhesive I can see why the other self adhesive products are more popular. At least it was only $60 for the 5x10 roll. I'll probably use dynamat or something similar for the inside of the doors.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

I finally pulled the old rotted plywood out that got "temporarily" installed 20 years ago, and got new thicker and sealed plywood "for now"

the notch on the right side is where my leg went through...

Got the left side in...

finished for now. need to add a piece of strap so I can bolt down the end of the panels.

got the trans mount made, able to attach to the t-bar cross member for the th400 and was able to have the engine and trans sitting in and supported by the truck for the first time! also couldn't resist slapping a few on the finished parts on the engine just to get a picture (and vision)
3" lowering spring in the rear to compliment the 2.5" drop spindles in the front.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Worked on fitting up the front tub on the passenger side. I'm happy with the way this one is fitting so far. It's not perfect but it's not bad considering I'm no sheet metal guy. I did the driver's side a while ago, but am not happy with the outcome. So looks like I'm going to have to redo it. Hopefully the inner fender will be salvageable.

Nice job! I had done the same on the jockey shifter of an old Harley. Most beer tap handles are too long inside the truck but that one fits nicely.

Thanks! Yeah, I machined a mini Budweiser tap handle, but even that was still too long...it got in the way of a few things. It was good practice for the porcelain one above.

Nice.
Any gotcha's on the install?
Did you end up using the kit's heater control valve? I have read that you should use a heater bypass control valve instead on the LS motor's just not sure how important it really is.

Thanks. The tubs are just a couple regular trailer fenders from tractor supply.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

I just bought a 1966 GMC 1-ton. It is low mileage, the owner says that the 9800 on the odometer is correct. It runs by pouring gas in the carb and today I pulled the tank. UCK, nasty and rusty. Ordered a new tank and sending unit today. I will start a build thread and post some pictures. It is an original stake bed with the original sides.
