Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
I just bought a '63 1/2 ton and the number behind the distributor doesn't match anything in the LMC Catalog the prior owner gave me. The number is F0701TTK.
Any help is appreciated. |

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Thanks for responding. It's an in-line 6. I was assuming it was either a 235 or 250 but my dad(who is now 77 and a retired mechanic) said it might be a 292. I'd like to know for sure what it is so I can by the correct parts to add AC and Power Steering, and of course, maintenance purposes. I hope the picture uploads and is helpful.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
In 63 there were two six cylinder options, the 230 and the 292. We will need a different pic to tell what it is. Get a pic of the passenger side motor mount and we can tell you for sure

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
A side view as noted (sorry for not mentioning) would tell for sure, but FWIW fuel pump behind engine mount = 292, fuel pump in front of mount between it and the distributor = 230/250.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Yep that pretty much sums it up. The 292 side covers are 6" tall as where the 230/250 side covers are about 4.5"

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Tj I'm just curious how can you tell that it's a 230 by looking at it from the top? All I can really see is the valve cover, coil, plug wires, intake and aircleaner.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Did you mean to type 63? 1962 was the last year for 216/235/261 and the 230 was introduced in 63

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
There was some dispute over that. haha I believe it was late 62 that the 230 was put out for 63 model trucks. And if I remember right the 235 was available through 63 in 4X4's. I'm more up to date on my 292's which were available in 63.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Yeah that makes sense about the 230 being first put in 63 model trucks but I've never heard of a 235 in a 63 but it could be a possibility since a guy that bought some parts from me said he has a 63 k10 with a 261 (at least he thinks its a 261) in it so maybe some early 63 4x4's had them?

63 was the first year for the 230 & 292. 63 was also the last year for the 235-261 in the 4WD.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
TJ stated that the 250's have D shaped pistons. Sliding a screwdriver across the top through a spark plug hole with a piston at the top is an easy way to tell.

Re: Need Help to ID a 6 cylinder engine Please
Even with a flash light and looking into the cylinder the d-shape is noticeable. I looked into my 292's cylinder for kicks and noticed it without having to look really hard at all.

For sure a 230 or 250. Now just need to see the piston.
