Dome light removal?

How does one remove the dome light housing without destroying it? I have figured out that it is not held in with screws. Are there clips that keep it in place? I think I had it out once before, but with my TBI, there're somethings I don't remember. Frustrating. I have a newer model light with map lights to put in, but I don't want to destroy my original. Thanks in advance

I have this issue too in my 1970 C10..

I suspect the previous owner may have glued it in but I cannot tell for sure.

The cover pops off but the housing will not budge

Yeah same here. Mine is loose but I haven't taken the time to figure out. Like I said before, I'm thinking that the housing is held in place with clips like all the other lenses in the truck.im going to get a better look at it tomorrow, so I'll let you know what I find out.

Not sure how to describe, but there is a "push in pin" type of thing, 1 on the left and 1 on the right sides of the base. These push into holes that are in the cab at the ends of the Rectangle hole that the light base sits in. The "pins" are hollow and split with a "head" on them that open when they are pushed thru the hole, and hold the base flush. They look like holes on the base, but actually are these pins. To remove you need to squeeze the two haves together so the head will come back thru the hole. Maybe a small screwdriver or dental pick while pulling out? Be carefull, they're plastic and old! Hope this helps

90% of the time the tabs will break off of them when removed. They are really brittle. You can buy replacements.

It's a push in sides while pulling kind of thing. I've taken a lot off of parts trucks and have never had one not break. The plastic gets brittle over the years especially in our Nor Ca. HOT climate. New lenses are available and are the way to go...

When you get the new housing, it will likely fail to stay put when you hit a bump in the road. I fixed this by trimming of a short length of mechanical pencil eraser and sticking them in the hole of each mounting pin to give them a bit more "bite".
