Anybody have a good guess as to the shipping weight of a 69 7500 with 174 inch wheelbase, a 6V53 engine, 5 speed trans, 2 speed rear end and a fifth wheel?

I could be off some, but my rough guess would be no more than 11,000.

I don't believe it would be a whole lot less. That Detroit is heavy and adds 1500 Lbs to the truck just by itself.

I was actually using the specs from my truck to figure this out. Now I find out that the truck I'm looking to purchase is a 69 GMC 7500 with a locked up 401 and a single speed rear end. That should be worth quote a bit of weight savings as opposed to my 66. I'll have to haul it 650 miles to get it home, so that's why I'm asking about weight.

Late to the party.. so jumping in..
I picked up this ole' Bowtie Jimmy Jewel a month ago.. 1977 Chevrolet HV70.. 6V53 screamer. Butterfly head bangin' hood Possible old fire truck. Pretty straight. Any old truck you can drive home gotta be a good one.. Im working on a some basic repairs.. not sure of its fate.. but it's gonna be fun.... and will ...run it loud and proud. I'm not sure about parts but that is a cool looking truck! It puts that Volvo in the background to shame... and it's got a Detroit.
An old fire truck wouldn't surprise me given the condition. What does it have for miles? At least it should all be minor stuff you have to attend to from the looks of it. |

103k + miles on the speedo. Cant confirm its accuracy but have an old inspection report with 95k on it in the 90's so.. figure its close.
I have found some evidence of prior roof mounted accessories that have been filled. So maybe.... but no PTO pump.. Maybe a support rig.. Who knows.. In addition the last owner passed along a note from an elementary school thanking the VRFD for bringing it to "Touch a Truck" day. That seemed neat.. Not sure of its true history.. but judging by its overall condition it was used and kept up over the years. Has some repairs and rust but not too bad for an old rig that really was never meant to survive its intended use. Not too much oil caked on the green leaker either.. Fires up with little effort and really for a Detroit not too much cold roll or smoke at all.. Still leaves it's mark though.. No Load limit is rated at 2950 RPM's ... and it currently has a low mount Y pipe and zero muffler... yeah it screams.. Will more once stacks are piped on it.. I like the odd ball fact its a Chevy even though I was kinda looking for a GMC.. Just wanted a two stroke Detroit .... period.. . |

Nice looking truck.
Reminds me a lot of my '67 7500 with the 6V-53. You're right about the "Butterfly head bangin' hood", lol. Watch out when you stick your foot in that bumper hole and jump up towards it. I whacked my head good one day, lol. Strange it doesn't have Cab Lights. The correct ones for a '77 might be the "Hockey Pucks" but I always liked the Yankee 77's. Cool it's got a Detroit. I almost bought a '79 7500 very similar, but it had a 3208 Cat instead, therefore I passed on it. Does it have Air Brakes? Also what is the GVW on it?

Yes sir.. I would passed on a Cat too..
I was weaned on an 8V71's air box drains. Hahhaha.. taste like oily chicken.. Air Brakes ...yep front and rear. GVWR 32700 lbs.. (grunt) Double Frame.. from the cab rearward. Or what I would assume double?? It's basically an overlap L frame over the upper C all the way to the bottom. It's certainly a Heavy Chevy. It will have cab marker lights eventually... rather have the torpedos,.. yankee 77 style are in the mix.. but I really dont want the plastic repop wannbes... ... And to correct my prior... ..the NL RPM limit is 2925...hhahha.. like those 50 less are gonna help my hearing...or make the neighbors any more thrilled. Im looking at a flat dump bed at a local pull yard.. Maybe a swap.. Pending some measuring... and cost.. Initial intentions were to build a BIG dually dumper.. .. Shorten the wheel base and lop off the rear.. drive it just because..... Not sure yet.. Im just working on it as I go.. doing what feels right to me. Worked on the Eaton two speed axle today... yet to find an axle tag.. ??? Id like to know the high ratio so I know what to shoot for as to finding a more RPM speed freindly ratio. Trans is Spicer 5252A.. close 4/5 .... and it needs an Aux, OD or higher axle.. First things first.... The original axle harness looked like it had been seriously overloaded.. hell ok.. it was barbequed. Somewhere along the years it had an orange exstension cord as a doner splice. I pulled the unit last week, cleaned it up, put in a new limit switch to get it working today... easy fix.. and I will restring the harness to a little something heavier to minimize any voltage drops. Nice part about the butterfly hood, fenders.... and grille shell ... it all can be removed in about 45 minutes. Ill be doing just that soon for the 'big clean" and engine Alpine Green recoat.. .. I mean... Its gotta be Detroit Green... And... I already stabbed myself just below the eye jumping up from the bumper foot slot.. Freakin' hood corners are sharper than they look....arrrrrrggghh..ouch. Live and learn.....and now.. look.. I plan to make a strap to hold the hoods together dead center.... if they fall and kill me.. it was simply meant to be..... I've alaways like the H/J cabs.. casue back in the 70's and 80's 99% of the time... if you swa one...it had a 2 stroke Jimmy in it... Funny story.... when I was younger.. always riding along with my Pop in either one of his White Freightliners (66 and 71)... both "318" (8V71) powered.. well the 71 was pumped a lil'.. I just thought all trucks were supposed to sound that way... all the rest were broken.. or had the wrong driver.. and... as I got older... ..enjoyed driving and wrenching on those two Jimmy's with him.. He was following me the day I picked this up.. I could see hois smile in the mirrors as I hit the governer limit..got the thumbs up.. Two Stroke Detroits... are gifts to us from the noise gods... . I just picked up a nice 76 Chevrolet Heavy's tri-fold brochure..also the 1977 70-90 series service manual.
Some neat old information Ill try to scan or photo and post the brochure. It actually reads that the Detroit Diesel 6V53 was not available in California ... .. go figure.. Just another reason to love em' ... . |

Yeah, California was the first state to reject them and they kept going on and on till they rejected just about every one of them. Then I believe the US government jumped in.
But they kept buying them themselves for many years later for military purposes. Like someone once said, they know a good engine when they see one. The engine that helped win the war (WWII) and probably contributed to the others as well.

It looks like they got the year right. The first one says "69". The second one is either a '66 or '67.

Yeah, it can be hard for new members to understand, but there are some things that we can and cannot do. But don't get discouraged. It's still the best forum of it's kind.
In my opinion though, members will see other members posting freely about parts, even sub-conscientiously, and then have a hard time understanding why they can't. I get a little surprised myself sometimes and then I realize, OK, he's a Premium member. It's not always real obvious, to me anyway, lol.

Eh' no worries..
Moving on.. Saturday.. tested the two speed out.. all good.. 10 screamin' speeds to nowhere slowly.. Runs out to about 60-65 mph max.. May can PU a few If I simply switch to 24.5's ?? After.. the hot run... Tried on the Dietz cab lights.. (nice fit) while the the old Texas Tea drained out. Dropped in some fresh Rotella T1 40W and a Napa Gold filter.. For the record.. upon further investigation my HV70 cab DID seem to have pod roof markers at one time.. I could clearly make out the 5 holes that were filled...... once I put my glasses on. and.. if you look close there were other accessory places filled in the center. I maybe will add a piece of glass trim to simulate a split windshield.. Some more shots for this H/J record. Yes.. its a bench seat.. I doubt it was ever stock? Right.. Twin stacks.. are certainly in the future.. And.. a lil' Alpine Green.. freshened up.. Ahhhhh.. much better.. . the longest road.. starts with the first few steps.. . Looks good.
My 7500 also had a Bench. BTW, maybe some others will jump in with their opinion on it, but I always run a "Low Ash" oil in my Detroits.
