Re: Hub cap ????
Jason, I don't believe they are repro'ed. I bought a used NOS uninstalled set that looked as clean of chevs - if never installed, they look new. Those could be as "late" as mid-80's?? Those are perfect. How's old red shortie comin along? Haven't seen you in a while!

Re: Hub cap ????
I guess what has to be has to be.
The caps I go by looking at the back rim. You can tell if they've been pried on to remove. If they haven't been removed they were never installed

Re: Hub cap ????
Tim, I am sure they have never been on a truck but I am going to try to sell them and I did not want to represent them as GM if they were repos. Any idea what they are worth?

Re: Hub cap ????
Depends how rare they are, how many years they were used (and hence demand). I paid $1500 for a set of NOS 1970 caps (one-year or two-year only) for an 8-bolt wheel, and there were 62 other bidders right behind me. It still hurts, but I have them.
Or if they're off a mid-80s van, maybe 1/10th of that! Either way they're very minty, even nicer than my NOS set. Gotta be several hundred at least if they're used on trucks.

Re: Hub cap ????
They are pretty run of the mill. I'm just wondering what I should ask for them.

Re: Hub cap ????
Dave, your hubcaps are 69-72, then there were 73-75. That's it! Then came this style from 76-91. The thing is, basically only two types of hubcaps were made for Chevy/GMC that fit nub-type wheels on 3/4t... 69-91!. In prior years there were nub-type 1/2t caps, but not for too long prior.

Re: Hub cap ????
Thanks - I was under the impression there were two types of caps in 69-72 and that one was stainless and one was chrome. Can someone break it down by year for me?
Any different for 8-bolt?

Re: Hub cap ????
I see prices all over the place. They are going up all the time. I see the 69-75 caps go for $200 or more for exc. cond. I'd think double that for N.O.S. On these later caps I'd venture to say $200-300. Let others work off of that with opinions and offerings.
Dave, I've never heard the rhyme or reason for some being stainless and some chromed steel. The belief was always pre-73 steel/post-72 stainless, but we now know of deviations from that...in both directions. I would assume the mixing & matching occurred closer to '73 and just a matter of supply. We only know the year by the convex with black paint vs concave unpainted. We don't know how many jobbers there were at what time and who used what material. We also don't know if hubcaps are the original ones from new or have been replaced. It's all myth until we talk to someone who was involved in GM parts supply at that time. I doubt any records would reflect such info. GM probably wasn't specific on the materials, just called for "bright work". I dunno

Re: Hub cap ????
Put them up for a 2 week auction on eBay with no reserve. What they sell for is what they're worth, really.

I don't think these are reproduced either. Are you getting out of the trucks? Do you have a clean roller I need to come get this winter?

Re: Hub cap ????
Yes I'm pretty much out of the truck business. Down to a bunch of small parts.

Re: Hub cap ????
My observations: First issue factory '69 thru early '72 caps were chrome over brass construction. Notoriously weak, they crack and dent very easily. A switch was made sometime in '72 to stronger stainless. Some assembly plants kept installing chrome caps till supply exhausted. Now, if you went to the GM parts dept. back in '69, '70 ,'71, you would get chrome over brass. If you went to the GM parts department in the mid 70's, chances you would get them in stainless steel ( the method of construction till '75), unless they had the older unsold chrome caps laying around. This comes to a whole other topic of NOS parts made in the early 70's vs. NOS parts made in the '70's or 80's.

Re: Hub cap ????
All the N.O.S. 8-lugger caps I've had where 69-72 chrome. I don't think they made a surplus of the late-72 style stainless caps. I wonder if they went straight to all stainless once delivered, used chromed surplus at the end when sales went so strong. They had to tool up and stamp for the '73 model change

But in seriousness, yes, I agree there's a difference between a part made during the production run and service parts put into the queue at a later date. Because for some reason they never seem to be quite right or the same quality! Dash clusters, door handles, and so on are prime culprits...
