Which clutch?

How can i tell which clutch I need?

Ive seen different sizes & variations online...

Is there a way to tell before getting the old clutch out?

Id like to get all of the parts beforehand ...

Its an 86 C30 crew cab. 454, long bed, 3spd w/ the granny
Not sure what else factors into which clutch.


Anyone?

You are in luck I just done the clutch in my 86 GMC set up the same way. Duralast NU-1909 at Autozone 12 inch, 10 tooth spline, 1 1/8th inch input shaft. Have fun.

Pretty easy to do?
Been a while since I did a clutch in the driveway...

Does that Duralast clutch kit come with the alignment tool too?

Yes it comes with the tool, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing.
As far as easy, it's not a 1969 model we'll put it that way, It's really a two person job if your on the ground. Here is a list of what i had to do.

1) get the nose up on ramps of some sort.
2) I had to take my seat out, so I could pull my flooring back and remove the floor hump over the tranny.
3) you'll need a big floor jack
4) I don't know about your rear cross member, but mine had to come apart in 3 pieces to get it out.
5) pull your distributor cap out of the way so you don't break it, because your going to want the motor to pivot back a little so you can get the tranny out. I used a 4x4 through my hood hinges sitting on top of the fenders, then used a heavy duty load strap wrapped under the rear of the motor, and tied up to the 4x4. This allowed the motor to tilt back just enough to clear the tranny down out of the hole in the floor.
6) I did have to drop my exhaust loose to get it out of the way, but thats because I had headers, and it was just easier for me to do.
7) I never fully dropped the tranny, just pulled it back enough to get the bell housing off.
8) Be sure to pay attention to the instruction that come with the clutch kit as far as making sure you get the release bearing on the release arm correctly, it kind of snaps into place to secure it.
9) It did take two sets of hands to get it stabbed back in.
10) If you can afford to rent one, I would highly suggest renting a transmission jack for the day, we nearly dropped it off the floor jack twice, trying to get it stabbed back in.

I have an 87 GMC pickup 304 V8 3 spd with Granny which really makes it a 4-speed top loader transmission . I am getting ready to change my clutch out also .....my question is are the specs on the clutch the same? "86 GMC set up the same way. (Duralast NU-1909 at Autozone 12 inch, 10 tooth spline, 1 1/8th inch input shaft)." Have fun. If anyone knows could I get a txt sent to my phone? 623 202-3122 P.S. AutoZone told me that they dont carry that clutch in any of their stores. that I would have to go to dealer to get it....
