Help me pick? C10 vs K20

I'm in a quandary lately. I pickup up a C10 project in July to keep me busy in the summer off days. I have only had to do minor work to it like adjusting brakes new shoes, valve cover and header gaskets, got some of the lights working again and so on. It's a running driving truck.now. Pretty strong if a bit tired 350, 3 speed on the column and so on. Pretty solid for this area, some small rust in floors and radiator support but not bad.

Anyway, I have personalized the truck with a few things but I'm just not into it 100%. I am reluctant to spend any real money on it. I had a sick line on a rebuilt M21 4 speed but I backed out. My previous trucks were 73-87 4x4s. Everytime I see a lifted 4x4 I seem to like my truck less. Especially 8 luggers. I am considering selling this truck for approximately what I bought it for and pay to have my father's truck shipped down here to GA. It's a 1970 C20 4x4. 307 4 speed, cab lights HD springs, 4.57 gears, pretty basic. He used it as a plow truck and a family friend used it as a wrecker in NYC. It's rougher than mine body wise and needs work to be road worthy I.E brakes and tires. The frame is straight and the running gear seems to be stong. All I need to do is pay for the ride here to GA. It will be a longer road project wise, but I think I would get it running and driving and mechanical ly, put a lift and some 35s and drive it whole I learn how to weld sheet metal. She needs a new cab floor and rockers.

What do you all think?

Re: Help me pick? C10 vs K20

I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting a K20 worse than a C10. But a "C20 4x4" is kind of like a "Jeep Wrangler CJ5"...

If I had to do it again, I'd do a K20. Thankfully, you can't go wrong with either.

Re: Help me pick? C10 vs K20

I didn't even have to read your post, only the title. K20, no brainer
Do keep in mind, the 4.57s are NO joke. If you want to do much highway driving, don't count on getting there fast and do count on stopping for some gas. If you're going to totally redo it, then disregard - you can resolve with an o/d trans and 4.10s, or even a 3.54 D60 swap. I've had several C10s and C20s and 1 K20. That's how I stack them in order too - it was a learning curve figuring out what I really liked. I'm sold on 3/4 ton and like both the Cs and Ks. I think a stock stance K20 is about the best truck looking truck ever made. Cool that yours has cab lights - one of my favorite options and adds to the 3/4-ton-ness. Anyway, it IS up to you of course. I like C10 swb hot rods too, don't get me wrong, but everyone has a favorite, K20 is mine, with C20 a very close second. By reading your post (I did actually read it), it would seem you've already started rolling off of top dead center, and I hope you enjoy your new K20 when it gets there

Re: Help me pick? C10 vs K20

Rant mode on.
Lately, C10 refers to ant Chevy/GMC truck, which annoys me to no end.
Rant mode off.
I tend to think people are 4x4 or 2x4 people; similarly, there are those that prefer more or less lugs. Then there are those that can't comprehend the difference.
I'm in the K20 (or 30) camp... How its badged is of little interest.

Re: Help me pick? C10 vs K20

I love my '68 C10 to pieces, it's fun to drive. But then I got a hold of a 3/4 ton......it's that stance!! Now I've got two of them 8-luggers, one is my DD. It's a way of life, with the 4X4's being the cream of the crop.

Simple answer: Keep your C10, and get the K20! Different trucks, different personalities, and different driving experiences. One size does NOT fit all!

It is a tough quandary. If it was me though and I could only have one or the other, no way to keep both, I would pick the K20.

It sounds to me like you already know what you want. The majority opinion here agrees with you. Go for it, and let us know when you've got it.

Yeah these guys seem to be on board with the K20. Seems like you are either a 4x4 guy or you aren't. Thanks to all. I will ponder it some more but the challenge or tackling this old workhorse is tempting! Here is a pic of it. Rough but potential is there.

Re: Help me pick? C10 vs K20

That truck has loads of potential, I see it has blue dial spicers, it doesn't have an open knuckle disk brake front axle does it? A factory 70 front axle has red dial spicers, open knuckle drum break. If it's already got front disks under it, it makes it that much more of a no brainer in my opinion. I feel any K/20 is the best of the best of all the 67-72s but that's just me.

Unfortunately it's drum brakes. The driver side spicer is red. This truck has 46,000 miles on it. A tow truck plow truck doesn't cover much ground in NYC I guess.

I agree with this!

Want a cruiser to get you from point A to point B and do it style? C10

Want to hook up the camper or throw all your junk in the bed and hit the trails knowing you can go anywhere on road or off? K20.

To me, finding a 4x4 is more rare and desirable. I think you NEED both.

If you can only have one, I'd go 4x4. But if you can keep the other one... well...
