hemorrhaging 230 in my 63

My 230 is leaking like a sieve. Can the oil pan gasket be changed while the motor is in the truck? I can tackle the valve cover and side covers easy enough. didn't want to get in to the pan with out some sort of feednack from someone who has been there.

thanks.

My 1st truck was a '63 w/ a 230 & I put a pan gskt on it in the truck. I had to lift the engine up though. I don't think I would do it again that way now.

Pain in the butt, yet it can be accomplished. Those 6 cylinders are easier to Pull than do a pan gasket from underneath. I'd separate the bell housing and pull the motor. Bet it would save time since your gonna have to disconnect the engine mounts and put a hoist in to lift the motor anyhow!

First check to make sure the pan bolts are snug, I used to snug mine every spring and the leaks stopped.

Re: hemorrhaging 230 in my 63

Thanks all for the feedback.

Started the task of cutting through 53 years of grime. Once she is cleaned up I am starting at the top. Valve cover (wet in the rear) side cover gaskets, (entire side of the motor is wet) and see where that takes me.

Is the timing cover integrated in to the pan? If not I will tackle that soon, as I am thinking about a new water pump. When I bought the truck two years ago the only things I didn't change were the water pump and radiator.

You will have to drop the pan to get the cover off. A new water pump is cheap insurance.
