Fixing shop roof leak

My shop roof was constructed of corrugated Strong Barn tin back when the building was built in 1968. The sheets were too short to extend from the peak to the eave and had to overlap. The overlap was where the majority of the leaks occurred in heavy rain and wind conditions.

After talking with several contractors (including our own forum member Davis Chevy who stopped by to meet earlier this year) the decision was made to overlay with new metal on perlins. The metal is long enough to extend from the peak to the eave this time and better not leak.

First piece of business was to make sure my builder was a Chevy / GMC truck and van guy. They even modify them for their use...plus all the guys on the crew drove Chevy trucks too. He does good work and has completed a number of projects for me.

Those are interesting truck mods. What's the purpose of cutting down the bedsides?

Thanks, I hope it is water tight.

I asked them about the cut down bed and they said for better goose neck trailer clearance on the sides. Must have been for another trailer, since it looks like this one would clear easily regardless of which way you turned.

Thats looking good..should keep the water where its supposed to be..I thought the cutdown bedsides were for a short person to reachover..haha

..just a late thought here and I'm not sure how the inside of your shop looks..freespan or center support..but did you factor in the extra weight of the second roof with snow on it..we don't have to worry much about snow here and both my building are free span..I just put a roof on my 25x50 pole barn and that stack of tin weighed 1511 lbs..

I will apoligize first ,but that crew would had not lasted 10 minutes on one of my Jobs , there is not one single safty messure taken in any of these photos, there are so many safty violations I can not even begin to address them , remember you hired them and were responsable for there safty during that project on your property. my #1 concern on any and all constrction project is tha each worker get home safe back to there family every night. sorry but I had to say

Now later this winter we can fix the ceiling that has been damaged by the leaks.

Here's a rule I have heard many times for roof work: If you fall, your fired before you hit the ground.

I do take safety very seriously so if my above comment offends, I apologize. Seriously though, I don't really know what the safety violations are or what precautions should be in place. Jrainman could expand on this?

The biggest safety problem I see is nobody is wearing a harness or is tied off to prevent falls.. I'm saying this and last week I fell off mine (while trying to be safe).. i was putting the tin on my 6/12 pitch..I was using ropes tied on both sides of the shop with a prussic knot tied in..I was wearing a saftey belt as well..it started raining so I immediately climbed down (water and tin don't mix).. it rained for about 30 min and quit..the sun came out..I waited about another hour to let everything dry out..I went back up on the roof and eased down to where I left off and when I pulled the rope tight it looked like you rung out a dishrag..feet went out from under me and here I go...12ft of momentum followed by a 10ft drop...(total time about 3 seconds)..luckily the big rock broke my fall..fortunately all I got was a bruise on my butt that looked like elvis..my mistake was not being 100% tied off..I know of 4 people here locally that have recently fallen off ladders ..1 is dead, 1 had to have his shattered leg amputated, and the other 2 had crushed ankles broke arms and ribs.. I was tring to be safe and got bit anyway..

I was wondering why I saw no Ice cutters installed on your new panels , thought you would have a good amount of snow in your region...

Wayne, no gutters are planned. Building hasn't had any for 30 years.

Jrainman, we are about even with St. Louis though on the eastern side of the state. Typically we don't get much snow now days and I don't ever recall any accumulation on the roof. It is pretty steep pitched.

i was in west salem drove up 130 and zigzagged thru the rural 2 lane roads back to se michigan

Very nice building you have there! That is a nice new roof too. Way faster than tearing the old off and starting over. I've seen a lot of people doing this to buildings like yours.

Thanks Dieselwrencher. We discussed taking the old roof off and every contractor recommended going this route.

Ogre, I saw the window seat in person.

So now the roof leaks are fixed, later this winter the contractor will come back and fix our shop ceiling that has been water damaged.
