Chevy 292 Muffler Question

I have searched around for this but wanted to get a bit more specific input on my question.

My wife has her 66 C10 pickup and her father had her 292 rebuilt and hopped up a bit for her. New pistons stiffing valve springs mild cam etc.

He also got her the Clifford 292 truck headers. And my question is a little complicated. Typically I like for her to do the research and decide what she wants to do with things so she can learn. However, we are both not 100% sure on this.

The exhaust features two long tube headers that end in two 2.25in collectors. We plan on extending that with an x pipe that then goes back and goes into a muffler and dumps before the rear axle. However, in her research, she seems to think that it is possible that instead of going into a single muffler (2x2.25 in and 2x2.25 out) that it might be better to go into two mufflers, one per each side (1x2.25 in and 2.25 out x 2)

I am not quite sure but I feel like the benefit of a single muffler is backpressure, which you want more of on the low end and less of the high end, and the benefit of two mufflers is less restriction/backpressure which you wand more of on the high end and less of on the low end.

Would you guys agree with this, or am I completely wrong? I think if she wants to go with the dual muffler setup that is fine, but she will simply loose a little on the low end.

Let me know your thoughts

Re: Chevy 292 Muffler Question

Not an expert on the backpressure subject you do want some, but in my opinion it will run better with dual mufflers and the sound will be amazing with the headers. You probably have enough backpressure with the smaller 2.25 pipes.

Re: Chevy 292 Muffler Question

Run dual 2.25 inch pipes. Won't hurt a bit. You will loose a tad on the low end, but not enough to be noticeable. I did this on a bone stock 292. Clifford intake with a 600 cfm 4 barrel, clifford shorties and dual 2.25 inch pipes with No cross over. True duals here with flowmaster 40's. That motor had plenty of low end left and pulled like a champ to 4500 rpm. Stock in form mind you...nothing internally done. My new 292 which is hopped up will have the same but will have 2.5 inch tail pipes.

Now if you want to keep the low end, run dual 2 inch pipes. You can also create a little more back pressure with a quieter muffler which will restrict some flow. Would love to see some pictures! Love me some 292!
