Re: Collector car insurance

Mine is pretty cheap (American Family) I do have to jump through a few hoops when I first insure a car. I have to have it appraised by a licensed classic car appraiser. Then I do an agreed value policy which generally has mileage restrictions. Mine is 3000 or less miles a year. I don't even come close to that and even if I did they have never checked my starting mileage

Re: Collector car insurance

I've been with Hagerty for about 20+ years and never really noticed that it's gone up more than the occasional inflationary adjustment. I've had 2 claims in that time as well (both comp, no collision though).

Re: Collector car insurance

I can't do the collector plate/insurance route....just too restrictive in the usage of the truck.
We often call it parade insurance around here...but the restrictions might be different than in the U.S and often the savings do not compensate for the restrictions....just my opinion from north of the border tho'.
All Good

Re: Collector car insurance

Sure you do, read your contract and don't believe what the salesman tell you.

Coley, the problem is that normal car insurance will say your "old truck" has little/no value in the event of a claim.

I was rear ended by a Mustang in my 1967 Nova. Insurance said the value (totaled) was only $800. But I could keep the car.

I tried but was denied b/c I don't have an enclosed garage, special rules for CA and FL due to car thefts in our states.

You do if you're with Hagerty, though they're pretty flexible. First line on their page is:

"While there are some restrictions in the policy..."

All speciality insurance has restrictions. You cannot regularly drive to work, for example, because that's not pleasure use. There are no hard set mileage restrictions, though, if that's what you meant.

Re: Collector car insurance

I've had hagerty on my mustang for 4 years now. It did go up $40 for the first time this year to $240/yr from $200/yr for 25K coverage.

This is a good point...and I looked into that when I got my insurance. They based on the value on what I had paid for the truck and put that against the market value of the vehicle....so i was comfortable with the regular insurance route.
Now, one thing we can do as well is supplement that with a certified appraisal which is a good thing...but your insurance will be adjusted to suit that amount.

As for the collector car insurance...around here it is only insured for so many days a month, never for driving to/from work and there are a few other elements to it. At least enough to put me off from it being a practical choice.

All Good
Coley
