First time swapping a motor, don't have much experience
Would anyone be able to help? I know this might be easy to most of you here, I'm not very savvy when it comes to mechanics, I can do the usual maintenance on any vehicle, but this is the first time I swap a motor, so my question is, how do I align the motor to the transmission, it's in but it won't close all the way, I'm doing this on my own, moving the engine hoist and the jack from the transmission to align it but it's not going in, the motor is a 305 off a 85 camaro, and the transmission is a th350 off the truck 72 c20, would that be the issue?

Re: First time swapping a motor, don't have much experience
You probably don't have the converter all the way back in the trans. There are about 3 steps going in. You have to rotate the converter holding the weight up till it drops back. The engine should bolt right up to that trans. If you get the angles the same & the dowels go into the holes it will fit up. The converter will be about 1/4 in back from the flywheel. After you get the engine bolted to the trans. You can drop it down on the mounts. Pull the converter forward to the flywheel & bolt it up.

Dowel pin in the transmission isn't lined up with the engine. The tranny and engine MUST mate up flush with each other.

It appears you are probably close as you might get, put your bolts in the bell housing and it should draw together, just don't force it. If it feels real hard to run the bolts in stop. Also like Wrenchbender said look up from the bottom and make sure your torque converter isn't bottomed out on the flywheel

Turn the torque converter by hand and while turning push it in. It should not be touching the flywheel at all even when the transmission is fully bolted to the engine

You have it close so put a few bolts in to keep the alignment and check the converter clearance.

Great!
I realized this morning I said the dowels in the transmission, but I meant the dowels in the engine to line up the transmission. Good job! Gary
