Question 1967 C/10 service truck

Found this at a local junkyard hasn't been registered since 89 I believe has no title, it once had a 292 with a 3 on the tree now it has the remains of the block no driver's door or tailgate and the box doors are beat up would it be something worth restoring? The cab is typical of a Nebraska truck the glove box door is gone and pretty much any other good things are too. But could you even fix the box? I believe it's a Powers service body. Is $600 way too much for this thing? What's everybody's opinion on this?

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I'll admit I'm partial to Orange C/10s. Body panels look pretty straight. Small back window is '67-only and cool for that fact alone. Driver side doors are not impossible to find. Unless you're a plumber the utility box is overkill. Can't tell from pix about the rust situation. You'd be tasked with the quest for a shortbed. I like stepsides, the mainstream thing is to go for fleetsides. But the first type that comes along is probably best.
292 lower block has possibilities. The head for the 250 is compatible. If you decide on a V8, save the passenger side motor mounts for some of your brother board members. 292 Pass side mounts are getting hard to find.
That's easily $600 worth of parts if sold alacarte.

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I think the answers are all up to you. If that's what you want, it's worth the money and worth restoring. To me the cab is worth $600... and you get a free frame, 292 crossmember, etc. I've run service bodies on quite a few trucks. Looking for the right one for my '72 these days. I personally would never put one on a 1/2t. The weight can add up quick with the bins filled. I couldn't imagine a plumber in '67, before plastic pipe, hauling many fittings and tools in that. I see 1/2t trucks as good for the occasional load, but not full-time hauling. That's why they make 3/4t trucks. Never heard of the body company. If they are still around they may still provide replacement doors

I'd pay 600 just for that box, or for the cab as special-k said, around these parts anyway.
Short utility box has got to be pretty rare.

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I would spend the $600 and restore back to a service truck! Cool and different.

I'd pay that in a heartbeat! I built a 68 short bed with a utility box and right hand drive. They are very cool. The doors are pretty easy to build I made all of these

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I think for $600 they ought to include that caddy behind it.
Provided the cab isn't rotted out and has a good title its easily worth the money.
Uh oh. No title. Parts truck.

I like it! I'd cut out and drop the bed front gate so it was below the window at the bodyline, other than that, color match a door, logos and drive it!

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

Yeah most people are hoping for a decent cab here there's not. In Nebraska you're doing pretty good if you can find a solid floor with rotted out rockers at least that's what I've found out anyway and this guy has like at least 1 C/20 and 3 other C/10's and in most cabs I'm surprised that the seat is in there and the new (in thing) is Purina Cat Chow seat covers and to reply that caddy needs a lot of everything she's a 52 sedan btw

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I'd absolutely pay 600 for that whole rig... I really dig the forward sloping rear wall of the utility body and the rolled in lip at the wheelwell... plus the fact that its a shortbed... all kinds of cool going on there.

Special K: IIRC only the K- Series trucks require the special 292-only crossmember. C/10s & -20s don't need it. The perches bolt directly to the frame. The Pass/Side 292 perch is rare. I wish Tom Langdon or Tom Lowe replicated them but I guess the L6 market is limited.

Unless that orange plumbers truck is a K/10. The OP called it a C/10. No pix of the front wheels [or the engine bay for that matter].

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

Personally, I'd buy it get it running and use it as is. Rust and all assuming rust isn't gonna hinder safety. Later I'd fix the rust but I'd definatly keep the bed and the color.

No reason you couldn't get a title. If they do a search for previous owners, I think it'll come up empty. So you'll get your title uncontested. Hopefully.

Last registered in 89 its probably out of the system so shouldnt be hard to get a title. Offer him 500 cash and drag it home!

I didn't know that. Thanks for the lesson. I've only looked into swapping a 292 (w/turbo) into a K/10 SWB and finding the cross member was the hardest part. I restored one that came factory with a 292. That's when I learned of the offset mounts. Mostly, I was focusing on all the "etc" that would make the truck surely worth $600. That's a neat little service body with the slant back, like a fire truck. I don't care for the high side boxes. Low-pros are far more stylish. And my point about a 1/2t not handling all the weight when bins are filled is proven in the picture shown above. That poor thing is squatted to the ground, couldn't even move like that!

Re: 1967 C/10 service truck

I'm not so sure that's a 292. The lifter side plate cover is one-piece, not 2-piece, and the motor mount is not staggered forward of the fuel pump. Could be a rebuilt 261, earlier [pre-'63] 2nd generation of L6. A 292 L6 [3rd gen] would be listed on the SPID as "L25 292 CUIN" -- no mention on a CS VIN truck means it got the base L6, the 250. Guessing the PO ran the hell out of the OEM 250 and then shoehorned in a 235 or 261. You can see the rebuilder's red tag on the block.
Six lugs = C/10. Are those 17.5" [5.25 x 17.5 w/6 lugs 5.5" spacing] rims?

Tim: You're welcome. I must come off as Mr Know-it-all on the 292 subject, but I've only been pedalling behind them for 43 years.
I have a K/10 x-member for the 292, I bought from a board member
years ago. I'm saving it for '72 K/5 project. I could take measurements of the piece if you want to try fabbing one out of a couple parallels of bent tubing.

You might find more love for the 235/261 2nd Gen L6s on the 60-66 forum below us. But good luck on finding parts for an engine that was discontinued in '62. I know there were Fenton headers and Offy intakes [even Edelbrocks -- back in the day] but unless your Flux capacitor is tweaked for the post Millenium Van Allen shift, you won't find any. And then there's the missing head.
So you're back to square one as far as drivetrain.
Sorry to be the guy that killed a 292 dream.
