Wiring Diagram for 72 c/10
I bought a 72 Chevy c/10 with an engine and tranny from an early 80's truck problem is most of the wiring wasnt done and some wires were wrecked. Ive managed to wire up the water temperature gauge and the tachometer and the oil pressure but I am having trouble with the voltage meter and the speedometer. First of all voltage where do I put a wire to test it? Just plug it in to the fuse box or by the alternator or what? The speedometer isnt hooked up there is one wire coming off the tranny it is orange and coming off the left hand side near the pan could this be for the speedo? It would plug in at the back of the speedometer correct? Thanks for the help and If anyone has a wiring diagram for a 1972 chevy truck Id appreciate it.

The speedometer in these trucks is mechanical and uses a gear driven cable from the transmission to the speedometer. This link may help you with the wiring diagrams.

The orange wire coming off of the transmission is probably for the kick down switch and you probably have a TH 400 transmission in the truck.
The trucks came with an ammeter and not a volt meter. If it is the factory ammeter check the fuses. There are two, one on each side of the radiator. The fuses are in line and the holders look like little footballs. The holders come apart so that the fuse can be changed. Welcome to the board! Jim |

No wonder my transmission wont kick down where does it plug in??? The gauges are non stock gauges so Ive been told just wire them into the fuse box to get a measurement. Anyone know where the speedometer hooks up ?? Thanks for the welcome!

As Sweet 72 indicated the speedometer is mechanical and the cable hooks to the back of the speedometer and is routed down to the drivers side of the transmission.
Since your truck is a 72 it should have the kickdown switch mounted to the accelerator inside the cab. I would be careful how you hook up your gauges! Jim |

I have a 72 chevy and I don't have the switch but it does have the spot to put the switch.
