Re: Mufflers

Depends on the muffler and if you like droning in the cab.

That's why the wife rides in back.

72 LWB C20, flowmaster 40's under bed. Amazingly quiet for this set up.
95 Xcab GMC same mufflers under cab - very loud. Iknow, different trucks but I think the later model would be better insulated.

The later model is better insulated, but due to the overdrive gears, the engine typically runs in that "drone" spot a lot more. Try running the 95 just over 2000 RPM on the highway (or right about where the other one runs). You should notice almost no drone. At least that's been the experience so far.

Re: Mufflers

Under bed - If lowered, mount the mufflers on their side and not flat for trailing arm clearance.

You're right, it' s a 5 speed manual (5th over) & you need to get about 2500 for the drone to quiet down. Even in direct (4th) it's louder @ any given speed / RPM so I attribute it to muffler placement. both are 3.73's

If your vehicle has an obnoxious drone put a "J" pipe on it and it will go away.... Mine did.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Not wanting to sound stupid & ask you what a J pipe is so I googled it - It should definitely take care of the drone especially if you do the math & calculate the frequency. Learn somthin' every day!

Re: Mufflers

A j-pipe will definitely cure the drone (from the mufflers, not the wife), but an h-pipe is almost as effective and much cheaper. I had one installed on my '98 Silverado with Edelbrock RPM mufflers, and it almost completely eliminated the droning.

Re: Mufflers

Good point, the '72 has an H pipe & is quieter. The '95 does not...food for thought. H pipe should be easier to install for sure.
